I see we all have a favorite IH tractor, some of us more than one. Was just wonderin what your least favorite IH was, you know the one that always pissed you off? For me it was a 560 Diesel, was a good tractor, but started hard, and I had to put a clutch and 2 ta's in her. Engine was good until 1 day one silo blower, engine exploded, pieces scattered w/ in a 100 ft radius. Needless to say, that was the end of that one! LOL

A good idea made into the worst tractor of all time had to be the 2+2. Ours had a good engine, but had a oil leak that ruined a clutch, they put aluminum bodied hydralic pumps in them, so when they did puke,( I lost track of just how many pumps we did put in it) you had filings contaminating system, HARD to steer, my shoulder still hurts to remember the tractor. There wasn't enough leg room between steering column and seat, I bent/broke off several keys with my knee. I traded it off for the first JD tractor in 3 generations on our farm, (that's how mad I was at IH over their tractors and planters). There were a few good points about the 2+2, but the bad far outweighed the good. What were they thinking???

I would say my least favorite was the first IH I ran as a child, a 240 Utility. The seat was bolted right to the frame with no springs, after a day of mowing and raking you had one raw a$$, let alone after a week. After running our H for a day I realized why my older brothers always drove the "harder" tractor while I ran the one that was more "my size".

Utility 330 hot, rough riding, dirty, some thing always had to be fixed when you started to used it, and all four wheels wheel hit the same bump at the same time.

656 Hydro gas model. Was a good tractor for light work. A gas hog if there ever was one.

Don't know - MY 460 gasser has been a real work horse. My least favorite one would have to be the 560D that flipped over and killed my friend last week.

My dad had a 275. Tough little begger. Couldn't stall it in a 7ft drift with blower (1970-72). Pop out the clutch and you'd get an 80ft stream of snow heading to the moon. Down side was it liked to be warm and cozy before starting. Emptied a few cans of Quick Start in it's life time (dangerous stuff). At times the fuel we gave it was questionable, from stove oil, and sometimes we used lamp oil, and one day something we found in a gerry can, couldn't figure what it was as the prev owner left it behind. Never complained.

My advice for all diesel IH's is get a hose heater and use it everytime before you start the tractor, that means summer too.

at least you do not have to replace the sleeves from cavitaiton after 1600 hours like I did on my 1066!! I can not beleive how many people think the 1066 is the best tractor IH ever built. Why didn't IHC come out with a water filter kit update when they first had pinhole problems with the wet sleeves? They were a big weight to the downfall of IHC.

without any doubt the 460 gas model had a 6 cly. engine .I couldn't haul gas fast enough to keep plowing for long. Also the 3 point hitch was not propertly made to keep implentments level.

Ha,thats funny(could'nt haul gas fast enough). I've got a 560 with the gas engine from an 806,you have to shut the engine off to fuel it or it'll never get full!

Jim: As Paul said I would be on you. IH designed the A for cultivating, you have found another use. I never had an A. I do have a Super A, 130 and 140 and have found lots of uses for them. One of the absolutely meanest little snow plowing machines I've ever used. Raking hay, mowing, you name it just about anything other tractors will do, only on a smaller scale. I have a picture here somewhere of Farmall 130, me in seat, pulling bob sleds with 2 cords of 4 foot pulpwood. The tractor pulled that right from stump where it was cut, using corked chains. There was about as much snow as we have right now. My dad hired these two guys who needed some work to cut this wood just before Xmas. Our plan was to haul this wood out in early Jan. with 300 before it went for rebuild. Clutch center broke out on 300 before woods duty came along. We pulled the 158 cords of 4 foot pulpwood from bush on 113 loads. Until we had the trail beaten down some of the loads weren't that large.

No question you need to try more things with the A.

Hugh,,it may come down to be what I am used to,,I am used to looking right down the hood and the lil A doesnt do that... I dont doubt that it would be good for raking and I know it has plenty of power,,I guess I should have said that I dont like the "feel" of it...I have a nice one in my polebarn right now,,I am working on it for a neighbor so she can sell it. I admit that if she was cheap enough I would buy it. Probably to pull a rake or a wagon for hayrides, I use my H for everything else around here except loading stuff, my loader right now is a 8n ford,....Jim

Jim, YOu better not let Hugh hear you say that. In fact I'm surprised he hasn't responded as of yet. He must be busy. As for me, I haven't driven them all, and from what I've heard, I haven't missed much by not driving some of the utility models as well as the 2+2 anteater, but of those I have operated, the 786 comes close to being a waste for what goes on around here. Its either too big or too small, and with the seat location, is most uncomfortable. I avoid it like the plague.

300-U No question! I lusted after one for years and finally bought one with a loader. What a disappointment! It was about like trying to steer a locomotive. I got mad one day and traded it even for a non-running Cub in pieces. The Cub turned out to have good wheel weights.

I'd have to agree, the 656 we had drove and steered as good as most cars. It took a stick of dynamite up it's @ss to start it when it was cold ,but a dam fine tractor in my opinion. Me, the only person in the world who likes 282's

Well, I like 282 diesels also. You can't beat the sound of them when they pull. Put a turbo on one and a 3 1/4" straight pipe and then listen to the sound

Larry: Well my 560D ended its career same as yours, but it had 11,000 hours in 17 years and being set at 90 hp to boot, so I will not fault that one very easily. No they were not hard to start if you made up your mind to start it as designed, rather than as you thought it should have been designed to start. My 656D and 560D were without question the most efficient horse power I ever had on farm. I probably put a total of 100,000 hours on tractors farming

The only poor tractors IH ever built were, some of the off shore junk and gassers without sleeves.

Hugh, this one, least favorite, is posted by wide open not me Larry B. I own a 706 D with a 282 and had a 560 D and both were kept up, glow plugs ,pump and timing and valves set and they will start easy. I use to run my 560 at 70-75 hp and my 706 at 80 hp. Run a turbo on both. Love them both. I never had a least favorite IH.

Larry: My mistake, I posted to your thread below, and then went right to this one. Looks like you both had 560s. Trouble a lot of guys have with 282 diesels is thinking glow plugs are only for cold weather starting. I go back to when these tractors were new, guys frouned on them because of time for glow plugs when starting. I used to tell a Deere guy down the road,"At least I have something when I get it going. He was running a 2510 Deere. We both used to tell another guy with an MF who used to tell us no need to climb that high getting on tractor. We used to tell him if you are up where you can see what your doing you don't have to climb on and off all the time.

I think mine would be the 1086 that i drove for a week and a little bit. The dairy farmer down the road went to holland for 10 days,so dad and i did chores. This thing was a piece,it took me 5 minutes to get it in reverse! then a bit longer to get it to go forward, you have to get the gears just right. So i pounded the you know what out of it tryin to move it. it waisted alot of my time, and i was always happy when i had to move bales, then i got to drive the 5240 case. One more thing about the old internationals.I don't like the shifters on the left side, and trying to get into them, the doors hit you. I guess if you are dutch and you buy somethings that are cheap you get crap, like a 1086 that don't go into gear.
But i have to watch it, I am a dutchman, but not a cheap one.

Why don't you adjust the trans brake and clutch instead of bitching, if you do a little adjusting the 86 series will shift just fine.

I like the 86 series, but this one is beyond repair,if you restored it than maybe it might work.I saw the guy from down the road plowing out the bank parking lot the other morning, and he moved back and forth with ease, just like there was shuttle shift in it. And the guy who owns the 1086 won't fix it, he will put up with the $h!t until the tractor won't go no more.

Our 786 shifts ok, only trouble in that area was a broken shift fork(don't ask, we still haven't figured out how that one got done) and the snapring on the end of the shaft that the range lever is on. PTO won't engage when its cold, no hydraulic pressure, too heavy for the horsepower, only thing its good for anymore is the TMR wagon, high PTO rpm and slow enough hyd. for the unloading chain. At least it starts good, even with the bad 6-month-old injectors its always got.

Farmall 300 was my least favorite. Because it neede alot of work. Steered hard, hydraulics wouldnt hold. brakes didnt work good. After I bought it and run it for the summer decided it needed engine overhaul and clutch and TA. Didnt have $ to fix the rest of it.
