I thought maybe it was time to clear this temperature thing up so here is the Canadian Temperature Guide. 50 Farenheit (10C)
Californians shiver uncontrollably
Canadians plant gardens

35 Farenheit(1.6C)
Italian cars won't start
Canadians drive with their windows down

32 Fahrenheit(0 C)
American water freezes
Canadian water gets thicker

0 Fahrenheit(-17.9 C)
New York city landlords finally turn on the heat
Canadians have the last B-B-Que of the season

-60 Fahrenheit(-51 C)
Mt St. Helens freezes
Canadian Girl Guides sell cookies door to door

-100 Fahrenheit (-73C)
Santa Claus abandons the north Pole
Ottawa canal opens for skating

-173 Fahrenheit (-114 C)
Ethyl alcohol freezes
Canadians get frustrated when they can't thaw the Keg

-460 Fahrenheit (-273 C)
Absolute zero: all atomic motion stops
Canadians start saying "cold 'eh? "

-500 Fahrenheit (-295C)
Hell freezes over
Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley cup

Now I don't know how scientific this research is but I hope it helps y'all understand the difference.. and yes I have been a Maple Leaf fan for 50 or so years...( I was tempted to leave the last line out and replace it with " Farmll H still starts"....how do you like me now?..... .Mike in exeter Ontario

Mike: I like that, can understand your feeling on the Leafs, however for the Farmall page H still starts would have been better.

Thanks for a real GOOD laugh! My next door neighbor here in south Jersey has a Deere 'B'. He was real proud when he spun that flywheel in 8 degree night time temp and she started. He was all aglow!!

The last F and C in your table also have something to do with the Kansas City Chiefs (or perhaps the Detroit Lions) winning the Super Bowl.

whatever happened to the plan to convert us (usa) to metric? i think it went the way of the mph/km per hour speed limit signs. i still like metric for most of the work i do..

Hey, for an old Canadian school teacher, you'd better learn how to spell Celsius or they'll drop your pension quick-like. That is hilarious. Remember when I was in school they used the term Centigrade, remember that?

It would take another old retired teacher to find the mistake!! yes, when I was in senior years the science labs were all in Centigrade! How are things in Edmonton?? We have had roads and schools closed for 5 of the last 8 days and they are predicting more for the next three days...we get Lake Effect snow here..winds blow across the open waters of Lake Huron and about three miles inland it starts to dump snow, then we get white outs and blizzard conditions with the cold arctic air..am sure tired of blowing snow, blow the driveway out to get to the farm, blow the lanes and yard there and by the timeI get back home I have to blow my driveway again..probably average 3 hours a day blowing snow...take care Mike..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario

Named so in honor of Richard W. Centigrade, inventor of the scale.

Hmmm, that sounds a bit too convenient, however the Celsius thing was in fact named after it's inventor, Anders Celsius who simply took the boiling and melting points of water on a thermometer and divided that linear distance into 100 equal parts which makes a lot more sense than the 180 parts between 32 and 212 degrees on the Farenheit scale, at least I think it does. All I know is that was minus 35 degrees Celsius here last night and that's cold on either scale.

Mike, Anything makes more sense than fahrenheit, inches, feet, yards, gallons, quarts, ounces, pounds, and anything else we have inherited from our British brethern. The world is metric, and the uSA is chaotic. As comedian George Gobel once said,"Did you ever feel as though the whole world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes"? maybe someday we'll wise up.

Bill, Most of us dont, most of the time. A couple weeks ago, we had a truck jacknife on I-75. A couple of morons stuck in the traffic turned around and drove backwards on the interstate until they could come to a police cross over so they could illegally cross to the opposite lane in order to make a detour. Since the cross over was well past the stopped traffic, these idiots had cars scrambling themselves to avoid another accident. The worst part was that had they taken another 30 seconds more to complete their caper, they would have been met by the State Boys.

Maybe you are more furry than me, but anything below zero makes me cold. This winter has me thinking of the southern states, as my son in arizona calls to taunt me when we get a cold day.

That's great, Mike!

Here in southern TN we had flurries for half an hour yesterday. There was at LEAST a thousandth of an inch of accumulation in one place I saw. Predictably, everyone started bemoaning the end of the world and all our stores were stripped of milk and bread within the hour. It was 15 degrees F this morning when I got up-- coldest weather we've seen in three or four years. We're all about ready for the hot-and-humid to be back. Us southerners can't handle this stuff. The weather guy calls it an 'arctic blast.' You guys just need to quit sending it down our way. Next thing you'll know we'll have penguins and polar bears in our creek, and whales breaching in the river.

Darren, who has had enough winter for one year (and who has a hide thick enough to be called a pansy for living in the South)
