I have a 400 farmall that has just developed a rear axle seal leak.Is there a remedy to help this or does it have to be torn apart and put a new seal in.

If you do get into the rearend you should look things over for worn or broken parts. We did this to our H and found a bad bearing and a worn sliding gear that needed replaced.

If its the gasket between the axel housing and transmission you might try what worked for me. When my 400 got worse I took the wheel off and then loosend the axel housing, it had been some time since I had taken a H apart so I forgot about having to go into the rear end to get the housing off, but it moved out a little and with a small screwdriver worked silicone gasket maker up between the mating surfaces. Worked fine for me.

There is an oil seal and felt washer at the out end of the axle tube. You need to remove the rear wheel and then remove the end cap. There is a gasket between the rear-end housing and the axle tube. This will require getting into the rear-end to remove the two bolts holding the axle retaining cap.
