John;

One of the biggest problems I have with these carbs.(A/B/C/SA/SC), especially the old cast iron ones, is getting the jets out one one piece so the passages can be cleaned out. Most of the cast carbs have some rust buildup behind these jets and even though you may be able to soak in carb cleaner and blow air through, this rust can cause problems. Believe me Ive had problems with a few of my rebuilt units. I have gone so far as to bore out the old jets, clean the threads and use jets from other junk carbs. One option I have endorsed is to buy a brand new Zenith carb for your tractor. I believe they run about the same price as my rebuilds and you get a brand new unit. Of course these carbs are universal so if you wish to remain original then that is not the way to go. Hope this helps.

Rebuilder, I have been looking for a kit for my Carter UT carb off a farmall C. Its all there and throttle shaft is not loose but some dummy stripped out the slot in the lowspeed jet .I recut the slot with my mototool and got it out. Do you know if I can get a kit with a new Lowspeed jet.Or just the Jet? Would sure be appreciated.. John

Greasy John:

Of the three options for carburetors I prefer the Zenith or Marvel Schebler over the Carter units. Very few I get in are in rebuildable condition(they don't seem to stand up as well) and worse I have had very little luck in getting parts for the unit other than a few basics. I can get an aftermarket kit but it is pretty much gaskets only(its been a while since I looked at the kit so I will double check). My biggest problem was the floats and choke shafts being bad or missing. There are no replacements that I know of. However, over the past several years I quit trying to rebuild these carbs, and have quite a few used ones which you may be interested in for parts. I don't know what the boys in the office want price wise but call 1/800/248/2955. My personal opinion would be the switch over to a Zenith carb. I do have contact with the Zenith company and I can get many brand new OEM parts yet to fit the Zenith carbs. Zenith also bought out the Marvel Schebler inventory(or so they say) and I can get OEM parts to fit these as well. Keep in mind while I can still get parts, Most of these Carbs are obsolete and so are the parts. I have at times bought a few parts and basically used up the rest of the inventory that will ever be made.

I will Look tomorrow in my Carter parts bin & see if I can come up with the jet and will post a message back.

Rebuilder,

I have a Carter model UT carb on my Super A, but not the typical model listed in the parts manual, and while I have managed to get all of the parts I need for a rebuild I am missing an important one. They make a new needle, but apparently don't make the replacement needle seat for my model (they have a smaller version but it dosen't fit my unit). Unfortunately even with the new needle, mine still leaks, so I think the seat is worn. I've tried cleaning it so I know it's not dirt etc., causing the problem. I'm thinking of puting a little grinding compound on a steel needle that I have and trying to dress the seat up, but would rather find a new or used seat if possible. If I sent pictures, do you suppose you might have a used seat layng around I might buy? Thanks.

The kit should have instructions in it. You can buy a can of carburetor cleaner in wal-mart for less than 10 dollars.

Take apart, soak in cleaner over night, blow orifices with shop air, put back together per instructions and you should be okay. Make sure you check your float for leaks while it is apart.
