Eventually I'll get the hand crank linkage on the front unstuck but, until then, how can I turn the motor on my H by hand?

Thanks,

Dave

I just take my 450 out of gear and use a pipe wrench on the shaft sticking out of the belt pulley to slowly rotate the motor.

Dave,I just finished taking my crank completly out and freeing it up,I then reinstalled it ,however the crank would not line up with the crankshaft besaues the motor mounts had wore through the years. Most people dont relize this becaues they never use the crank.

Did you have the motor out or the front wheels off when you did it? How did you get the linkage out? For me, the short cylinder with the teeth that catch onto the crankshaft pully (or its nut) is rusted solid to the hole in the transverse part of the frame in front of the motor. I was hoping penetrant and some banging would get it loose enough for me to rotate the motor but I'd like to borrow on your experience for getting at it. I just want to turn the motor to get at the release levers on the clutch and statically check the timing. The starter works fine. I'll use the other motor-rotating methods and wait for warmer weather if it's too involved.

Thanks,

Dave

If you are just wanting to turn the motor over and not start it, what I do is put the PTO in gear and then put a half of a PTO universal joint on the PTO shaft. Put a bar in the universal and you can turn the engine. Be double sure the ignition is off, probably best to take the coil wire loose to make absolutely sure it can't start.

You can do the same thing with the belt pulley. It will be easier to turn since the gear ratio is more favorable than the PTO. All the same precautions apply.

Not to put down Farmall or any thing but think about how old JDs are started, you turn the fylwheel not much differance from the belt pully. I have never been husr with my JD but have almost broke my arm with other tractors with hand cranks. By the way please no hate replays I have just about every color of old tractor there is I like them all, just wish I had the money to have at least 2 of every color

Hey Old, I seen a guy start an old deere once by wrapping a rope around the flywheel then tying the other end to his pickup, just drove ahead and it took right off. PUTTER

Well, certainly don't think it's a good idea to start them by hand that way. However, years ago, we used to start the MD by belting it up to the Super A. I recall my Uncle doing that several times, and never caused a problem.
