OK Farmallers. There is a 1066 for sale for $4,000. Engine and tires supposedly good. Cab is trashed which doesn't bother me. What all is on this tractor and what type of questions should I be asking? Thanks in advance for you comments. Being an H/M person, I don't know anything about it other than the description in the "150 Years of International Harvester".

Red: Having bought a new 1066 in 1975 with cab air and duals, I can quite agree with all the advise you have received. My tractor always dynoed at 160+ hp, but then whats new, most IH tractors exceeded their ratings.

The down side of a 1066 is fuel consumption, quite good when tractor loaded to the limit. On light work they are terrible. As I see it 10 gallons per hour not bad on a forage harvester built to handle 200 hp or a 25 foot cultivator, but 6 gallons per hour baling hay a bit much. My 560D or 656D would bale hay faster on 1.25 to 1.5 gallons per hour, faster as they were a bit more agile. I had 5 other smaller tractors so 1066 was never started unless the job required 100+ hp. The 56 series tractors were much better on the fuel consumption, especially on the lighter work.

Around here, if it runs and operates o.k., $4000 would be a good deal. Go to it cold and run it till it's good and warmed up and see how everything works.

The one I have is the first IH I have ever been around ('cept a couple CaseIH's). I like it! Can't beat it for the money.

Sounds like a good deal the main things you have to watch for on the 66 series tractors is the engine oil and the TA. Check the engine oil to see if there is any mostiure on it anywhere if there is any it will be on the rubber seal at the top. The TA stay strong unless it has been abused check around the bellhousing to see if there is any oil seeping out. That is one way to check another is to put it in 7th or 8th with the TA pulled then let out on the clutch without slipping it if it takes off right away it is not leaking if it dont the TA is leaking. Other than that I have never heard of any other problems.

The Red, Like Tractor Vet, & Wide Open said Clutch, TA and the front end. Also is there any problem in the transmission, or rearend, gears will chip teeth sometimes. 3 yrs ago did a clutch/TA job, also countershaft seals on my ol 966. The guy who did the work for me checked the rearend and tranny and mine was good to go. That peace of mind is work tons to me now.
If the back end of that 1066 is as solid as the engin is suppose to be thin you can't go too wrong on this ol'Darlin
Hope this helps,
John A.

Had one with a year-a-round cab. Best thing I ever did was take it off. Rattled and shook like no tomorrow. Loud as a freight train too. Really looked cool w/ fenders and hub duals!

I like them, good looking machines. Don't like the cab, unless you get one with the Ansel cab on it (looks like 1256 type cab). The red cabs are ugly - they look set back and the doors are too far ahead.

Anyways, DT414 engine - same basic design used through the 88 series tractors. Most of them came with the dual PTO 540 and 1000 rpm. Had 116 PTO horsepower, weight 11,861# and cost $21,081 new. This is from tractortips.com. Made from 71 thru 76.

My boss has a 966 and I enjoy running it, except for the noise - they are really loud! But maybe the turbo on the 1066 will mellow it out a bit... Fairly trouble free in my area, except for the clutch and TA because of people who don't know how to use them. DON'T ride the clutch it won't stand up to abuse as it is dry. TA should be shifted in 1 second or less. I'm sure you already know most of this, but anyways...

1066 had 125 pto hp. I bought one new in 1974 for $17,000 turned it up to 165hp no trouble and traded it off at 4000 hrs, just got one last year to pull big wagons with 155hp check TA out good strong tractors.

Hey, The Red,
They're real big. 'Specially parked next to an H.
I've seen several people say they're the best big tractor IH made. Wm

Thanks William. I have squeezed a (SHHHHH HHHH) JD 4240 into my barn with the soundguard cab so the 1066 should fit.

Well the BIG thing is how good is the clutch and T/A . The other thing that takes a beating is the ft.end and also look at how much ware is on the pedals as to the amount of side slop they have and the hitch balls the rest is not that hard to fix and the price is not to bad and the cab can be fixed as there are upholstery kits avilabale and won't break the bank. and if ya NEED THE WINDSHEILD i know where there are acouple of them at.
