What do you guys suggest

I've finally come to the conclusion that the 400 that I bought is too much tractor for what I need. I'm only going to do some mowing and gardening maybe some light farming in the future. This baby, attached as I am, just won't go slow enough for tilling, and it is too big to haul to the deer lease... I also feel like I am wasting a machine that could be doing some real work. You all know how it is. I've become very attached being my first tractor and it's been baptised with a little knuckle blood. But what can I get that is as economical and more suited to my needs? I'm afraid that I'm going to have to go with an old Ford, and I sure have become a Red Man.

Hey John, Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything yet. I just wanted to get opinions from you pros. How the heck can you love a tractor? I'd probably sell my dog first!

If you are going to use a rototiller, find a utility tractor with 3 pt hitch, 35 or 40 PTO HP and a low gear of 1 MPH or less. I think Hugh gave you some good suggestions.

GT: The 400 would work just fine, if you had TA and also do as Wardner said, get a 560 rear end even the TA probably most economical way to do that one.

My concern is if you go smaller on a Farmall you will gain nothing. 300 or 350 will have less power, yet be the same speeds and dimensions as the 400. Go smaller than that and your into transmission driven pto. and still too much speed.

The very best tractor for you with that tiller is something like a B-275, 414, 434, 444, MF 35 or 135 or a Ford, Oliver 550, make sure you get live pto for that tiller. Those tractors all have factory 3 point with draft control as well as dual range transmissions with 2 gears that are slower than your 400 in number 1. These little tractors will also give great manuverability in a yard situation.

Don't even look at 300 or 350 utility, same speeds basically as Farmall. Farmalls were engineered to work best at speeds between 3 and 7 mph, and that is not tiller work.

Thanks Hugh, That's good advice. I'll look around for one of those models.

GT: Well now that we have you talked into two tractors, you may as well have two completely different configurations. Farmalls are great tractors for what they were designed for, wide open field work with heavy drawbar pull. There are however some nice little small quarters, manuverability jobs those short little utilities are much better designed for. What fools a lot of people is they can often buy a big row crop for less money. There is also good reason for that, it's called demand.

I remember in the late 50s, my dad was looking at a 3rd tractor. He already had a H and a 300. He came home one evening, had been pricing new tractors. A Farmall 230 was only $200. more than the 130, around $1,800. as I recall. He first thought for the price difference, he may as well have the larger tractor. Then he decided 230 would be close to same dimensions as the H and 300, wouldn't be anymore manuverable. Probably not as good as the 230 was wide front and H and 300 were narrow front tracrors. Finally he decided 130 was the best buy as his main reason for buying was a smaller tractor for those light and tight quarters little jobs.

When I was looking for this tractor the one thing that kept popping into my mind was "it's better to have more power than I need than not enough." I now see the error in my thinking.

Thanks for the input, you guys. I guess I'm a collector now! I know where there is a 300 gas that seems to be in pretty good shape. I'll go check it out. I suppose I'll keep the 400 around in case one of the neighbors need their house moved :-)

The 300 or 350 Utility tractors might be more to your liking. I'm attaching a link to a picture I found Googling. I have no idea where or when it was taken, but its a reasonably good pic of a 350U.

GT, a Farmall A,C or H would be the ticket for you, don't forget the little diesels . the A,C and H are all easy on fuel The B250, B275, B414,424 2424 and3414 would all be excellent for your hobby...hang onto what you got...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Yea, a TA would sure make the difference. Mine does not have one. This sure isn't the place to confess this, but I sure am not inclined to start a project like splitting that thing. That was one reason for buying that tractor. It was in such good (and quiet) running order. I do envy you guys that will rebuild and restore these beautiful pieces of our history. This is one reason that I want to stay with Farmall.

We run a 300 with a tiller and transplanter, the TA really makes the tractor go the right speed for those applications...does your 400 have the torque amplifier (TA)? If not, it can be added.

The ring and pinion out of a 560 is slower. The 560 also has a slower first gear. I put these parts in a SMTA along with the better bearings. The tractor is very slow. I need the slow speed when running a heavy bush hog on overgrown fields. It helps when tilling as well. When the TA is pulled back, top speed is probably less than 10 mph -- about the same speed as a Cub.

I saw a 560 rear frame in the YT "Photo Ads" several days ago. It is probably still there.

From a man who has done the same thing. Heed the recomendations. Store it. I wish I would have never sold my 300. I would suggest a 340 - still new enough looking - better than a Ford. On another note does the 400 have a TA? I found tilling in first gear with my TA in low was wonderfully slow....

Push it in the corner of the garage, cover it with a sheet, and tell your wife its an important piece of history that will only become more valuable. (Stress the more valuable part)

Then I would look for a Super A.

whyncha' downgrade to a 300 or a 200? Of course, once you sell yer 400, you'll want it back again! I know how the 1st one is as I wish I'd never let go of my 44' JD A, even though I'm on tractor number 4 now...a 55' 300 gas WF.
