I am ready to purchase a Farmall 450 diesel/gas start. From the original owner. this TRACTOR WAS TAKEN CARE of and appears in original beautiful condition. My question is the price to high? I can not find updated information on price? $ 4200.00.

Mark, I have had a 450 diesel for over 23 years and I love the tractor. Some people think I am crazy but I use it all winter to feed the cows hay and it has never failed to start. I can't say that about our John Deere! My 450 has all of the options and they all work great. I have had the TA rebuilt once but I think it went out because my tractor has about 64 horse power and I have pulled a 4 bottom 16" plow though clay for years. I love the look on the faces of people when they watch me start it up for them the first time. It starts easy as a gas tractor but when you throw the lever forward after it warms up it can shake the whole barn and blow a cloud of smoke 20 feet up!

I would have to see it first but $2500 seems like a realistic price, unless this tractor has been RESTORED meaning the engine. Just remember you can sink $2500 in the motor just with the bottom half.

Mark,
Depending on where you are at and what the tractor has on it depends on the price. If this tractor has all the options, 2 pt hitch, good working TA, live PTO, power steering, wide front if you prefer, working guages, live hydraulics, good tires etc then I would say the the price is in the ballpark. Make sure the head isn't cracked by checking for compression in the radiator. If you need to know how to test the TA drop me an email. Good luck, you have to love those gas/start diesels.

Corey, Just wondering what the proper procedure is for checking the radiator pressure to see if head is cracked?

John,
Not sure if you will get this but I just checked the forum this morning after a couple days. What I do for checking the radiator is to make sure there is no compression being blown back into the water. On start up or when you first switch it to diesel open the radiator cap and take a look inside, do this when the tractor is cool to avoid water from boiling over, safety, etc. With a good head the water will be rolling in the radiator, if the head is cracked there will be alot of bubbling. With a good head there will be some bubbling as well because of circulation but with a cracked head it is quite noticable. Also look for oiley water if you suspect the head is cracked, this can be another indication.
