806 diesel shifting problem

I've got an 806 that is made into a high-clearance sprayer with an 80 foot boom. It is made to spray tall corn or short crops. I've used this tractor for 15 years and never have had any problems. It has about 6-7,000 hours on it and was ordered new from the factory without a TA. A problem developed this summer when I was spraying beans. I would like some ideas on what it could be. I spray in 2nd High about 1800 rpms. It started kind of making a catching or clunking sound and it felt like it was popping out of gear.
I drove it to the shop and had an IH mechanic come out to look at it. It works fine in the low range and reverse. High is the problem. He took up the plate under the floor and thought things looked pretty good but the shift fork was worn bad and the bushing that the fork goes over and moves the gear was wore pretty bad on one side. He thought by fixing the fork I would get by OK. But, that didn't fix it. Now when I put it in any of the high gears and let the clutch out, it just makes a high-speed grinding noise and it won't even go into gear very often. Just wondered of you think it could be something like the eye bolts in the linkage that could be bad or maybe the nut with the keeper on it that holds the main shaft with gears on it in place has come loose, and will require a split.

Joe; I have encountered this very same problem in an 856 only with the forward reverse; particularly the reverse. While worn parts in the whole linkage probably add to the problem, I believe excessive wear in the Hi-Lo shift collar(IH part #393521R1) which the fork moves is your main problem. Yes you probably will have to split to fix, but if your tractor is like mine & you plan on putting many more hours on it it will be a good time to go through the whole rear end. One idea would be to look for a cheap 806 at auction with a bad motor to supply you with parts. Keep in mind you will need to watch for serial number breaks to be sure the parts will be identical.

Thanks. The collar I am talking about, the good side is towards the rear of the tractor, and it's about an 1/8th inch thick. The wore side is about a 1/16th of an inch. We thought just by building up the shift fork it would make up the slack of the worn edge on the bushing.
