I have a 1958 International Harvester 350 Utility Tractor. The lever stud on the lever shaft is worn down. To replace the lever arm from an IH Dealer would be $499.00. It is recommended to replace the gear shaft as well. Ouch! I would like to have a machinist build the stud up to original dimensions. Does anyone know what size the original stud was? Or how I can locate this information? Another alternative would be to get used parts. I do not think this steering assembly was unique to the 350 but I do not know what other models had this setup. Any help in either direction would be appreciated. Thanks, Allen Rush

Allen; The manual/power steering units on all the early utility IH tractors are a great weak point I believe. I am actually surprised your dealer can come up with a shaft for you! Last time I checked a couple years ago, only one shaft was available for well over $600. I used to rebuild these units(as much as possible), and usually I could never keep up with the demand. Mostly because 75% of the cores and used units brought in had busted shafts or wore out worm gears. I would estimate that for every unit I rebuilt it took four other units to get the parts to do so.
Many people tried welding the teeth back on to the shaft but never helped. You have to realize that when the front wheels hit a bump or stump, all that force is transfered back into the box. As far as the stud you need, I assume it is the tapered stud which follows the worm gear. I don't rebuild these units any more but I gave those duties to a new guy. Don't worry, he's got a pretty good head on his shoulders. We should be able to come up with either measurements/stud/shaft or anything else you need.
try this number 1/800/248/2955 and ask for the guy who rebuilds the steering units.

By the way I think the 330/340 ut steering units are the same(or closest to it) to your unit. 460 units were quite a bit different.

Post back with any further questions.
