I heard that if you take your old farmall gas cap to a IH dealer, they'd replace it for free. I'd like to know what reasons there are for replacing the cap, other then it being defective.

Thanks everybody! I suspect my H has the new cap (if the bad caps were on the H), because it was sold and bought through an IH dealer in 1989. I will check the cap when I see the tractor next. I do know the cap is red, but the tractor was resprayed in 1989 as well.

Jeff is exactly right.I've had same thing happen years ago on our 300U while plowing & at other times when working tractor for long hours. If you'll use the link I posted yesterday you will only have to send tractor info(year,ser.#,etc).You can keep the old cap.

The gas cap replacement program was a result of a lawsuit filed years ago. The old caps would leak and possibably cause a fire. When you drive over rough ground with a full tank they will leak all over the place. I-H either agreeed or was ordered to replace the old caps upon cust. request. I've taken three of them in in just the last 5 yrs and they were replaced with the new one. I just gave my name and adress and the model tractor. Had to turn over the old cap to them though. The new ones worked good for me although they were black and I had to paint them to match.

I remember all of this stuff with the gas caps when I was in my teens. As is noted in the other replys. You needed your original RED cap with a single hole in the very top of the cap. Most all of them have no fiber seal ring left! Name and model of tractor with serial #. Then you get a pretty new BLACK one with two holes and I think there is a better baffle system inside. I DID have one of these red caps shooting gas out of it on our 300U while plowing. When the tractor tips to the downhill side in a furrow..O BOY. It can realy spray with a hot tractor! If you need the TIME POLICE cap keep the red one and PAY for a new one; they a SAFER! Jeff

the new caps have two vent holes and they have an extra set of ears to line up to remove them. they are a pain to take off. there is one on one of my m's and i ground off the extra ears so it's a lot easier to take off or put on.

I've replaced mine as gas was spilling out of the vent on the cap and running down the side of the tank, which is kind of dangerous. I believe this was the reason that they are replacing them for free on all older models. What years are included in this I don't know.

Most have been replaced by now.
But alot of guys think it is cool to get a new one for their 50 year old tractor.
I first heard about it in the early '80's.
I have not replaced any of mine.
There may be a safty issue. A law suit I think of maney years ago.

The old origional caps don't vent well. In hot weather or long usage tank will build up lots of pressure. If cap is removed at this time gas goes everywhere causing likleyhood of fire.I believe IH started replacing caps in early to mid 70's.If you need one go to Link Gas Cap.jpg This should get you a printable order form.
