What is a Farmall 656 gear drive rated to pull for a plow. i had a 3-14" that i used until i broke the axle, i just bought a 4-14" to replace it.. should it handle the 4 bottom or should i take a bottom off?? i see most 560's pulling 4 bottoms and a 656 is the upgrade of the 560.. any info would be appreciated..

Soil Types- make all the differance. I pull 4-16's with and 806-diesel. I pull it about 10inch's deep. It is a load!

I pull a 4x16 oliver semi-mount with my 656D in 2nd gear no problem. Only have to pull the TA once in a while going up hill. I even plowed some OLD sod this fall and she did just fine.

A 656 has a smaller motor and a little less horse power than a 560.

sammy: In diesel they are exactly the same 282 cubic inch, 540 pto at 1800 rpm. I pulled a NO. 60 - 4x16 plow for several years with 560. Later I went to a semi mount plow Model NO. 510 - 5x16. I pulled that with 656 clearly because of 3 point hitch. I put well over 10,000 hours on each of these tractors. The 560 does have an edge on drawbar pull as it is heavier.

I might also add the diesel pump was turned up on my 560 for more power on field cultivator and forage harvester. However from factory they are very close.

The 656 has the SAME diesel engine as a 560 - the d282 with glow plugs.

As for gas engines, I don't know - but I don't see why IH would put a smaller engine with less hp in a bigger tractor...

Soil types make a huge difference, but we pulled a 4-14" trailing Moline plow for years with a Farmall Super M in 2nd and 3rd gears.

We sold a lot of 656 tractors where I work. Most pulled 4 sixteen inch plows. Had no complaints about power. The 656 has the same size engine as the 560. A 282 Diesel or a 263 gas engine
