IH/Farmall I-404 - Other Names?

Merry Christmas everyone.

I have a 1963 IH Farmall I-404 (with C-135 engine). I hear alot about "C" and "H" tractors. I browse the message posts looking for something related to my tractor, but I never see an "I" post. Is there another name for the I-404? I mean, is it a member of a "C" class, or something like that?
Thanks... Larry

My neighbor has the International utility 404. Even though I use Deere equipment on my side of the fence, I admire that little tractor. He uses it extensively, mowing, post hole digging, moving bales and such. It sits outside and waits for its calling. I borrowed it once to pull a rake. That sure is a good little machine.

If your tractor has a wide front and 28 inch rear wheels it is an International 404. If it has 36 inch (possibly 38, but I don't think so) rear wheels and either a wide front or a tricycle or narrow front it is a Farmall 404. These tractors are loosely related to the C/Super C/200,230,240 series in that the engine is similar, as is the 4 speed transmission. The engine is a member of the C-113/123/135 series.

First, thanks for all your comments.

I'm pretty sure it's an "I-404"... at least, that's what the ID tag says. It was made for the military (again, according to the serial/ID tag). It's a wide-front with 28" rear wheels. I'm not sure about the tranny, I only know it has 4 speeds and unknown whether there are more or not. It definitely has the C-135 engine (I'm tearing it down right now...and it's a mess).

Some unusual things about it... 1) it's yellow (I can;t find yellow paint in any of the Farmall/IH schemes); 2) it has a super-heavy-duty dash throttle (very heavy cast metal with no wobble like most dash throttle levers); 3) it has a gas pedal too on the right side.

Actually, the 404 transmission is a 2-range 4 speed, giving 8 forward and 2 reverse. Live PTO was available on the later models.

CNKS: I have an IT service manual and just want to remind you of the 2404. This manual also calls the high-low range an option. A forward-reverse was also an option. Those two were both options and were either or, not both. It also makes no mention of Live PTO. I don't see a printing date but the manual is called No. IH-21

If your 404 is a I-404 it is a International 404. If it is a row crop type tractor it is a F-404 which is a Farmall 404. Generally speaking Farmall tractors are row crop whereas International tractors are standard or utility (in the case of the 404) type.

"C" and "H" WERE the model numbers of those older tractors. Your "I" 404 is an "International", as opposed to a McCormick, and "404" is it's model number.

There is a long story behind which International Harvester tractors were badged "McCormick", and which were badged "International", and I'm sure someone will post that.

P.S....

I have one of your 404's bigger brothers, a 424 diesel. It's been a heck of a good little tractor.
