I have a farmall 300 that hasn't been run in 6 years and I'm trying to resurrect it. I connected the 6 volt battery (positive ground) today and immediately noticed that the ammeter was showing a discharge even with the key off and the light switch off. I started disconnecting wires to isolate the drain, and the ammeter stopped discharging when i disconnected both leads on the generator. Any ideas what the problem could be? The tractor turns over so I know the starter works. Thanks

I removed the GEN wire from the regulator, and the ammeter went to 0. I removed the regulator cover, and banged on the cover to loosen it. I didn't see anything burned, and the two relays inside were open. Put the cover back on, and reconnected the GEN wire, now the ammeter doesnt show any discharge. Don't know if that fixed it, but once I start the tractor, I'll see if it charges. Thanks for the help.

Howie - Most likely the cutout relay in the regulator has stuck closed. To test, reconnect all the wiring and the battery, then pull the wire off the "GEN" terminal on the regulator. If the ammeter returns to 0 with the GEN wire removed it's time for a new regulator.

Maybe the regulator has shorted out somewhere.. has it been converted to 12 volts? CS
