I am wanting to find out more information on 766 gas tractors pros /cons, production # ,horsepower ect. looking for a tractor project and thought this would be unique. seems as if there are not alot of them around. If anyone has any orignal pics that would be helpful in restoration too . Thanks Chris

We had a 766 gas on the farm when I was growing up. We also had a 766 diesel. Both great tractors. The 766 gas was our chore/loader tractor, and the diesel was our number two field tractor. We also had a 966. The 766G was better than a diesel in the winter (northern WI) for hauling manure and feeding. Only bad thing was the gasser sure new its way yo the gas tank. Either 766 would pull a 5 - 16s plow and a 13ft tandem disk with 20 inch blades. Dad has a 666 gas since he retired that he uses to care for about 10 head of cattle. Love those 66 series tractors.

Chris: The reason you don't see many 766 gas is fuel economy. That also became a big factor heading into the 70's with fuel prices on the rise. Here in Canada where we were paying about 35% more for fuel than you were in the US, even the 06 and 56 series gassers are very rare. In fact the only 6 cylinder gas Farmall I've ever seen was a 460. The guy that owned it never used it as he could't afford the gasoline. They burn about 3 times the fuel diesels do.

Mark: Not 100% certain but I think Gibby is right. There were a few exceptions on that rule of thumb and if my memory serves me correctly I think 766 was one of them. That 360 diesel was quite a vicious engine.

IH also put that engine in early 886 and I think they were rated at 85 hp. I drove one of those 886 a bit and in my opinion it could give one of the new 100 hp CaseIH a hard run for the money.

It's a C-291, same as late 706, 756, 666, and 686.

Chris: I really can't say for sure for the gas engine. I those days gas was out of the question, in fact since 1960, I really cant see how anyone could justify the purchase of a gasser over 30 hp.

I have a 1975 IH buyers guide on tractors, tillage and loaders. This guide no longer even shows a gas engine for the 666 or the 766. I do know it was there in earilier guides. IH must have dropped the gas engines on those two models before end of production.

Isn't that the other way around? Gas always produces more hp, just less torque

Hi Mark,

Where I am getting the numbers from is a boiled down copy of the Nebraska Tractor Test - March 2003. What I have found is that these are much closer than manufacturers numbers. My old 300 tuned up and after fresh rebuild Dyno'd at almost the same horse power as this document said it should. But if there is a better number for a tractor, I'd love to make sure my document is as accurate as possble.

Regards
Dave

A book I have lists a deisel powered International Farmall 766 at 85.45 PTO hp and DB hp at 74.36. Tractor was built 1971-1976 and weighed in at 11,340 lbs.

Book doesnt list anything for gas model
