Battery question

My 12V converted A wouldn't crank so I checked the Ever Start 625/550 with one of those eydropper hydrometers and found all the cells 50% or less. All the cells showed plenty of water, so I hooked up my manual charger and charged it for several hours @6 amps. The charging rate dropped to less than 2 amps, which, according to the charger instructions, indicated a full charge. However, the hydrometer still showed discharge..(2 cells 50%, 4 cells 25%). Imagine my surprise when I took it to Autozone, who pronounced it "fully charged!"

I also recharged a 6 V battery (for the unconverted H)the same day. In that case, the hydrometer and charger meter agreed on discharge and charged.

How can the specific gravity be so low on a charged battery?

thanks,,,

An accurate, temperature-compensated hydrometer is the most accurate way to measure the the state of a lead-acid battery's charge.
I have always had doubts about the accuracy of those "eyedropper" sized ones. We have several large banks of storage batteries at work and we use an expensive digital hydrometer, far more expensive than you could ever justify at home or on the farm, but very accurate.
Obviously yours wasn't telling you the whole story.

do you use one of those little gadgets with the floating balls? All they are good for is to sell new batterys. When I worked in the repair shop years ago farmers would come in with a hard starting tractor. we would do the test and say, "see, here is a weak cell" then we would sell a new battery. the farmer got clean connections, a fully charged battery, and all were happy.

When I was a little boy and screwed up my mother would say "shame on you".

You sound like you are a big boy who lied.

SHAME ON YOU

wasn't a lie. The tester said the cell was bad. Likely was a little weak and the new battery fixed the farmer right up. If it would not have been for the tester we would have had no way to convince the farmer that he realy did need a fresh battery. You know how we all are. Somethine that we bought 8 years ago we think "I just bought that a year or two ago"
