I am still trying to figure out the year on a M that I have. The serial number is gone and tryed looking on the platform but the letter is wore down to much to read. One thing I noticed is that most M's ive seen dont have the battery box under the seat but mine does, looks just like the one on my dads 300. Mine also has a distributer instaid of a mag. Is there any other place I can look to try to find out a year?

Paul,
Take a picture of it and post it here on the board.
The numbers you gave are part numbers.

the tractor serial number should also be on the uper right side on the right side of the engine block just belowe the head. on a raised flat piece of cast that kinda sticks out. their is probably paint on it and the numbers might be hard to see since they are stamped. good luck.

Your tractor has casting codes on almost every part on the tractor. These are not part numbers, but are the date the particular part was cast. They are in the form 12*3*T or, in this case Dec 2 1950, and will probably range over 3 or 4 months. The * resembles the head of a screw. As the post says below they range from I (1939) thru Z (1954)for the years the M/Super M were produced. EXCEPT that V was not used, and both U and W represent 1951. You M would have been assembled probably within a couple of days through maybe a couple of months from the last casting date you find. The serial number on the engine does not match the chassis serial number.

The M could be a 1953 or 54 model uless someone took the seat off a newere tractor. It should also be newer than a 1947 because it has a distributer unless someone changed that to.

Theres also letters on other castings on the tractor. Look on the Rt. side of clutch housing and on the heavy cast part of the wheels, should also be a date an letter on the engine block. Does it have disk brakes? Hope this helps.

Should be a date casting with a letter after. "I"would be a 1939 thru "Z" 1954. Did you find a date code on the engine?

I think the battery under the seat makes it a super M. If it's original. Supers go from 52 to 54. So that narrows it down a bit. Others would probably be able to narrow it more with more details.

That sort of sucks when you cant't find or don't have a serial #. if you look on the right side of the engine there should be a serial # towards the front of the tractor it is about half way up the engine, it is stamped into the engine, if you get the # for me i will get the year for you, i have a book with serial numbers. An old timer once told my dad, "if it don't have a serial tag it ain't worth much"

That is the part number of the block, not the serial number -- Again, look for casting codes, not part numbers!

on my M" the date is under #3 cyl. Ex. 6:9:T makes it a 1951.

Paul: Upon checking the 1951 senario, it should be a 1952 Super M. Sorry about that one, but what I was saying in previous post should make it a 1952 Super M, if indeed the number 6943DJ is the serial number.

6943 is the part number for the block -- At this point in time the only way to know is to look for agreement between casting numbers.

Paul: I have to agree with Andy on this, but will qualify this agreeing with a few items I see unanswered. For a 1951 Super M your battery box under seat sounds right. The number 6943DJ does sound like a serial number. The J at the end of serial number stands for Rockford clutch always. Those clutches only came in the very late 40s or early 50s. A Super M should have an F preceeding the serial number. I read other posts at different intervales, so am forgetting, did you say yes to disc brakes? I think the numbers you must look for now are casting codes, and those are the ones with numbers and a letter with what looks like a round head screw cast in place. There will be day and month by number and year by letter, with one of these look like screws between each.

If it's a 1951 it's an M, live hydraulics didn't happen until sometime in 1953.

My M is a '51 and has live hydraulics. I haven't checked the origin of the pump.

Someone incorrectly gave "T" as the identifier for 1951. It should be "U, V, or W". 1951 is the only year to use multiple letters.
