I replaced some parts in the dist. The bushing was good but the 2 thrust washers were replaced that took the back and forth play out and is just right. Also I replaced the 2 gov springs and the weight guard because i had badly worn areas from the back and forth play of the shaft. I set the timing by putting it in the notch and then turning the dist till the spark come from the secondary cable. I played around with the carb and timing and when I screwed all the mixture screws in it purred like a kitten. Hit the throttle and it misses. Then mess around get it to sound good at fast idle idle it down then it is awfully poppy. Could it be a carb prob? All passages clear new gasket and float. Good fuel flow. Where the power comes in from the ign switch while it is running I put the digital volt meter on and it's going all over. And every time it would have a occasional loud pop it would jump to 16-19 volts. What is the dwell suppose to be on these? Plugs are burning good nice blue spark. Any body got any ideas! 12v(-) elec. ign.

I've measured the dwell at 63.0 degrees - 70 percent for a .020 points setting. I'd be wary of using a digital voltmeter to measure pulsating DC like an ignition system. It takes a digital meter time to stabilize on a reading. An analog meter might work better. Have you checked for vacuum leaks around the carburator and intake manifold? Also, I'd set the timing with a timing light at idle rpm. Then watch for timing increase as rpm increases.

I would be suspicious of the condenser or coil, but I expect that you have changed those.

Ty, I have worked on these old Farmalls for around 30 yrs. and my experience is that if they run good at an idle but miss when you pull the throttle back, the power valve(screw) on the carburator needs to be open more. The air screw should be shut then opened 1 turn and the power screw shut and then opened 2 and 3/4 turns.Hope this works for you. The power screw is the one on the bottom front of the carb.

I would try four new plugs. Even had that problem on a B with new ACs. Everyone can have a bad plug now and then.

Try Autolite 3116, they seem to work a LOT better than Champion plugs. I've had engines run rough with brand new Champions, and switching to Autolite plugs made a world of difference!!

Make sure that the negative wire on the coil goes to the distributer. The wires on the coil need to be switched when you change to 12 volt negative ground.

It might be something already tried but try a new coil wire to dist. some days the MTA would run good then the next it wouldnt changing the wire made all the difference with it.
