undertook overhauling our primary tractor a 656 gas. took some time and a lot of questions, but it's together now and sounds real good. 5860 original hours, not bad huh?
i half wish i could have had a "practice" tractor first, but so far it seems that i didn't mess it up :)
for the first timer i wouldnt recommend anything physically larger than a 656, since it almost is too big for readily available and affordable automotive type lifting equipment. (i swear i heard the 1250 lb. engine stand groaning in pain)
also if you have parts such as a head laying around, make sure to seal them off so the critters can't pack corn into the crevices!
the only potential problem i see is that the crank case still has a condensation problem--there is a small amound of white film on the stick and coating the filler neck. maybe i have a hairline somewhere? outside temp was 30ish F, and tractor came out of a 50+F shed
avoiding the temptation to work it hard..

We've had 3 of these types of engines and there was always moisture around the dip stick. gets trapped at the top of the filler tube and can't evaporate out. Could dry out if run at temp for a long period.

Karl,

That seems odd having condensation on a brand new overhaul. I think you do need to put it to work and run it up to temp for a time to see if that condensation stops. Is she breathing out the tube okay?

One would normally see condensation on engines that are started and stopped without ever allowing them to warm up. The engine cannot develop enough heat to burn the moisture off.

Just a thought,

Allan
