I have a 1966 farmall 140 31311 J. 12 volt conversion. I bought new points, cond, spark plugs and wires.I pulled the distr. gear all the way out, is there a certain way to put it back in.
This tractor ran well a few months ago, and now it tries to start but cant fire. is there a way to find out whats wrong.I have power to the push button starter and the starter works hard to fire but now fire to selinoid.I even ran a wire from the neg side of the selanoid to the starter and still no fire from the coil. I crank the engine until pressure pushes my finger off the number 1 plug and line up the coil button to the #1 plug and still no fire? what else can I do.

Huston, do you have fire at the coil ? on the 140 there is a wire that runs from the hot side of your ignition to the coil it runs along the left side of the tractor in the wire loom. it should have a connector to the ignition switch behind the panel check the wire connection on the coil make sure its hooked to the Ign side of your coil then check and see if you have power there with switch on? if not run a jumper from battery to the coil and try to start the tractor if it fires up you need to start tracing the Ign wire first place to look for a problem after the coil is behind the dash panel the previous owner of my 140 could not get it to start it cranked but no start i found the wire disconected behind the panel tractor gave same symtoms as yours

So I guess it's not so much a timing issue, it's that you have no spark at the plugs, so

1. Confirm you have 12v at the coil first
2. If you changed the point, correct gap? Internally grounded? Did you make sure to replace the rotor (I have done this)
3. Turn the engine and observe the point, any spark jumping across gap? (Blue or yellowish?)

But did you set the points when they are at the maximun opening??
You should be able to manually open & close the points with voltage applied and see a small spark when opening them.
This will give you the high voltage spark at the coil IF all parts are correct.
Maybe the new points are dirty??
Clean them with lacquer thinner or some evaporating solvent then run a clean dollar bill through the points to act as an abrasive.
Try the spark test again.
Good luck

Wayne: Long time since I've heard that use for the dollar bill. An old gentleman I knew used to do that. He always laughed at one of his repair shop competitors using a $100. bill. He claimed the competitor just wanted to let everyone know he had money, that in fact the 1 worked just as well as the 100

Hugh, I used that trick quite frequently when my son and I used to ride those dirt bikes, really impressed some of our fellow riders at how quickly I could get that bike running again.

Im kinda stumped. . . Sure the two wires on the coil arnt reversed?

By fire you mean no spark a the spark plugs right? I'd say that if you have 12v at the coil (wired correctly) and the point is set correctly, a good cap and rotor, that the condenser would be the thing I would look at next.

I bought new set of wires,points,condseor,cap,12 volt. coil and still no fire to distr. cap wires plugs etc. I get power to all the wires on the control panal and followed all the wiring diagrams. put the TDC compression stroke at the number 1 plug and put the black button in the distribitor pointed at the number1 plug.

my battery takes a licked and it still is kicking and the starter still turn and has power to the lead attached to the starter but no power per test light to the coil side of wiring.

I have a push button start and a key ignition but it is not hooked up does the key ignition need to be wired to the system also even though i have a push button start? the key ignition is only on and off switch and its not connected to the wiring system could this cause the problem?
