Farmall H Lift All Problem

I have a 1952 Farmall H with a McCormick front end loader which I use around my farm. Recently I drained the lift-all and refilled it with fresh SAE30. The loader worked better now than any time I remember over the past twenty years until this Saturday. While working, things were operating normally until I heard a grinding noise, and than the loader would not lift when I pulled back on the control rod. The pump didn't seem to be activated, but the loader did not drop its position. Does this sound like a serious malfunction? I have a parts diagram of the lift-all, but would be greatful for any advice. Do I need to remove the entire lift-all, or may some parts be accessible from the tractor's outside?

pull the cover first, it is easy and will take all of 5 minutes. Then you can see if it is all connected or not if it is, then move to something else. let us know-

If you put in SAE30 HD (High Detergent) the lift will not work because of the foaming action of the HD oil. Drain and use 30ND (Non Detergent). It does not foam and the lift should work.

I did not think of the foaming with HD oil. I will switch to 30ND after I check the mechanics. Thanks for the information.

Sounds like the drive coupling came off. Take off the bottom sheet metal cover and see if the drive coupling is still connected. Sometimes the pins that hold it on wear out. The coupling is a simple drive shaft with a slip over ring on each end held on by pins. Roger

That would explain the grinding noise. Can I remove the bottom pan without the rest of the lift-all coming down with it? I hear the pump is about 125lbs. I guess I should drain the oil first, and remove the pan second. Thanks for the information.

third party image

It's Just a metal cover between the lift all and the transmision. 4 bolts and its off.
Here is a photo of the coupling.
