A friend recently bought a 656 diesel that was hard to start and would die when you tried to idle it down. He changed the fuel filters, bled the filters and now it will not start. Not even on starting fluid. The throttle lever on the Roosamaster pump seems to move ok, but we are unable to get fuel to the injectors. Have plenty of fuel going into the pump but none coming out. He has a service manual but it does not show how to bleed the pump. He has two other 656 tractors and has never had this problem with them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom/Idaho

I remember fixing my 656 Dsl, had a simular problem. Off the top of my head (not positive) but I think the return line was plugging up at the tank connection. Some oring or something was breaking up in the pump and the debris would plug it at the tank connection point. I put a fuel filter on the line just before the tank and it never did it again. The only thing I wonder about is what came out of the pump?

Sounds like the metering valve might be stuck in the off position. One of the symptoms of a metering sticking is that when you try to idle the engine down it will die. Take the top off the pump. When you move the linkage you should see the valve move. It's at the back of the pump and has the govenor linkage hooked to it

you say your not getting fuel to the injectors how do you know this did you crack the lines loose at the injectors to me it sounds like the same thing that happened to my AC 190 I had to get the injector pump rebuilt cost about $700 but mine was in very bad shape if its air in the system crack all the lines at the injectors till you get fuel out of them if this doen't work take the pump to a deisal injector place and have it checked /rebuilt

You sometimes also have to take the fuel line loose on the pump till fuel starts to run. Are your glowplugs working? On my 706, same motor, I changed it over to spinon filters. Took a filter base from a 856 and made a mounting plate. Not hard to change and works a lot better than cartrage filters and getting air traped in them.
