Question for Bob M

My Super C has the original 6 volt positive ground system. I swapped out the original generator which was not putting out with a known operable one. The ammeter indicates a good rate of charge, however, using a analog voltmeter only indicates an output of between 3 & 4 volts. I have cleaned the commutator twice. Will this rate of charge maintain a 6 volt battery? Any suggestions, short of a rebuild? Thanks for any help.

Peabody - Your ammeter and voltmeter readings are inconsistent so it's uncertain what's going on. A few questions:

1 - Is the ammeter is working correctly? With the engine stopped, it should indicate discharge when you turn on the ign switch or the lights.

2 - Where are you taking your voltmeter reading? Best place is directly across the battery posts. Next best is at the regulator "BAT" terminal and a GOOD ground.

3 - Is your analog voltmeter reading correctly? If it's been dropped, or if lightning has stuck near it, it can appear to work but will give false readings (don't ask how I know this…) Try a reading across a fresh flashlight battery (should show 1.5 volts) and your car battery (should show about 12.6 with the engine off).

Post back what you learn - I'll help if I can!

Also punch below for a troubleshooting chart that might be helpful.

Thanks, Bob M. Yes, I believe the ammeter is working correctly, as it is new. I used your troubleshooting flow chart a couple of months ago to determine I had a poor ground at the regulator base. Prior to that, ammeter was irratic. After that, the ammeter shows continuous charge at above-idle speed. Yes, shows discharge when switched on before cranking, and also when lights are turned on. I WILL check the voltmeter calibration, though. I have dropped it SEVERAL times, have blown several fuses and have generally abused it. Come to think about it, it's about time I bought a new one. Thanks for your input. I will let you know.

Well then it sounds as if your generator is working fine! And probably it's time to think about a new voltmeter...(!)
