Question 1--In order to start my Farmall 706 tractor, sometimes I need to hit it with a hammer a couple times before I get back on the tractor and hit the starter button and get it to start. If I don't hit the starter with the hammer a few times, nothing happens when I push the starter button. Why is this? Do I need to rebuild the whole starter?

Quesion 2-- What Wide-Front-Ends would fit on my farmall 706? I currently have a narrow front end and want to look for a wide one.

Question 3-- My tractor's serial # is 38121 S-Y...What does the S-Y mean?

Thanks!

Just for kicks wire around the clutch safty switch to make sure it is not the culprit that is causing the intermintent starting. The clutch safty switch wears out every four or five years with use.

You need a wide front off of any other 06, 26, or 56 series tractor. Look for one off of another 706 first, beacause if you get one off of some of the bigger tractors, you might need to switch hubs and wheels, too. I would highly reccomend an IH wide front instead of the aftermarket brands. You should have no problem finding a nice IH built 706 front end in a salvage yard for $800.

The serial number- 38121 makes it a very late 1966 model. The S means it has a TA, the Y means it has a 12 gpm hydraulic pump, both are very common options.

I thought a 56 series front end would work too, but I recently bought a wide front end off a International 656 HC sight-unseen, but when I had it delivered to my house I noticed that there was no way I could get it to mount on the Farmall 706. The 656 WFE had a piston mounted on the WFE for power steering and the way it mounted to the frame was different than the 706. Perhaps if I should have gotten a Farmall 56 series rather than a International 656 HC? Either way, now I have a 656 HC front-end sitting in my yard that I can't use for anything. I guess I should have asked for pictures before buying it.

Without looking in my owners manual I think the S mean it has a T/A and the Y means the tractor has a 12GPM hydrrulic pump. I might have them backward. I really enjoy my 706.

Thanks for the response to question #1. Any suggestions on where I can get brushes? (The tractor generally doesn't start if you don't wack the starter hard with a hammer). -Matt

Hi Matt,

I'll bet the reason you have to tap that starter with a hammer is because the brushes have worn down and are not making contact with the commutator.

If this is the case, the problem will continue to get worse until the brush holder is riding on the armature to the point that it will not make contact at all.

On the other hand, if the starter will finally kick in after repeated tries at the button (and not tapping the starter itself), one would suspect the solenoid.

Just an idea,

Allan
