Plan on changing oil in two of the 140's I run. Presently use 30wt HD Castrol in both tractors. Have thought about switching to 15w-40 heard it had better additive package and detergency. Have not done so yet cause manual says 30wt oil with low oil ash level. Have also understood the 15w-40 has somewhat higher ash content but am thinking the higher detergency and additives will offset this. Any opinions or ideas. Both tractors see moderate use. Avg. temp is low about 20 in winter and highs 90-95 in summer. Thanks.

Avery: I use 15W-40 detergent in every thing from 4 cycle lawn mower to 6 cylinder diesels, Super A, 130, 140, cars and trucks. I used to use 30 in summer 20 in winter detergent and changed about 15 years ago, to the 15W-40. I get far in excess of average between engine rebuilds. My lawn mower is 28 years old and on its 3rd deck and wheels, second handle, original Tecumseh engine. I never rebuilt a diesel tractor under 10,000 hours gas 4,000 hours. The lawn mower has always done 1/4 acre mowing.

As with anything else a little preventive maintenance goes a long way. Fresh clean oil, no matter whether it is multi- or single viscoity, or what brand will save you money down the road. Most of us don't work these old tractors near as hard as the original owners did when they were the 'big dog' on the block. A couple quarts of oil is cheap compared to an overhaul or a rebuild.

I'm a stickler for correct oil in tractors, especially the newer ones. But when it comes to small engines, I recommend to my customers to use what they have on hand. I would sooner see them change the oil regularily than wait to long (or not at all) just because they don't have the right oil on hand.

An engine will last much longer being changed often with the wrong oil, than not often enough with the right oil.

Stick w/ your #30. Your tractor calls for it in temperatures above freezing. They want a maximum of .5% sulfated ash content, detergent oil.

For consistant temperatures below +10 F, they recommend a #10. If you don't want to change out the oil for winter use, a magnetic oil pan heater works fine.

I use straight 30wt oil in both of my tractors. You will get as many opinions as there are people on this board. They will vary from the viscosity of the oil to the brand of oil to whether you use detergent or non-detergent oil. There have been previous discussions on the use of detergent oil. If you are currently using detergent then stay with it. If you are going to use detergent for the first time you can expect a lot of the old crud to start breaking loose. In this case it might be a good idea to drop the oil pan and clean out what you can.
