I am considering buying an IH 454 (or 464). I am planning on using it for brush hog and mowing. They were made in England. Are these well made, well engineered tractors ?? any weaknesses ?? Thanks for your time Jim

Hi, my dad, then my brother have owned the same 454D for over 30 years. The hour meter quit several years ago at about 5000 hrs. but probably in excess of 10,000 hrs on it. Great utility tractor. German Diesel runs for ever with minimal maintance. Had diesel go into the crankcase oil twice caused by an $8 oil seal on the Bosch injector pump.
As someone else mentioned the parking brake if accidently left on and the tractor driven the transmission/hydraulic system will be clogged with brake lining. Also the hydraulic brakes can be a problem when they are old and the seals start to leak and air gets in the brake lines.
Also check to see if power steering unit is leaking oil from under the dash down by the clutch and brake pedals. My brother's has leaked a little for 10 years now but not enough to fix yet.
Another caution is be careful connecting to other hydraulic cylinders make sure that they have the proper IH Hytran hydraulic oil in them.
My brother bought a used log splitter at an auction sale, brought it home connected it up to the 454D. What ever type of hydraulic oil was in that log splitter cylinder it did not mix with the IH Hytran and it foamed and bubbled and got air bubbles in the hydraulic brakes. Had to drain the whole system.
The Bosch injector can easily be adjusted so the 454D will crank out 50 HP.

I have a 454 Diesel which has been turbocharged while leaving the fuel delivery & timing standard. I also run AMSOIL synthetic lubricants throughout. I'm getting 53 PTO Hp on a dyno. Less fuel used in constant power conditions also.

JB: How can I adjust the Bosch Injector Pump to increase the HP from 40 to 50 on a 454 Diesel? Is there any litature or do you have any written instructions for this procedure? Thanks

Bob

Both tractors are approximately equal; the 464 has some minor updates vs. the 454. The most obvious difference is that the 464 has a single PTO shaft while the 454 has both a 540 and 1000 rpm shaft. These tractors were assembled in both England (a "B" in the serial #) and the US (a "U" in the serial #) from various parts manufactured worldwide. Most chassis parts were from the UK, the diesel engine from Germany and the gas engine from the US. A very well built utility. They are rated at about 40 hp for both the gas and diesel motor. The diesel is very strong and economical, but relies on an ether injector to start in cold weather. Has very good hydraullics. Is equipped with hydraullic brakes. They are very good, but more complicated to fix than mechanical brakes. The worst thing about mine is the parking brake - just never seems to work right; I'd prefer an old-style handle. Has the fuel tank behind the seat. With all those hydraullic and fuel lines, splitting the thing is a pain.
