What year and was there a special reason for painting the grill and the hood below the raised rib white? Have seen them years ago. Neighbor pulled one out of an old barn a few weeks ago. Thanks for any answers.

Many of the H's & M's with the white grille were equipped with M&W parts. Look at the OLD M&W dealer books for the Hyd pump add-ons and nearly EVERY tractor has the white painted grille.

I personally think it was just the "thing" to do to your H or M in IL at the time..... ...Anyways, its NOT a factory paint job and its NOT a demo tractor either!!!

I agree with Rustyfarmall -- but it makes me want to look the other way.

This was a pretty common practice, done to make the old Ms and Hs look like the brand new 350s and 450s. Might even have been part of a dealers update package. I have seen quite a few painted that way here in the midwest.

My father was a IH dealer when the white grills came out on the new IH tractors in the late 50's. It wasn't a update on the IH tractors nor was it anything IH had dealers do. We repainted our resale tractors with the white grill because it seemed like the thing to do. It probably is like when IH changed in 1937 from gray to red, many of the gray tractors were painted red.
