Hugh, I read through the archives and found that you pulled a 5btm-510 plow with your 656. I have a 656D and I am looking at a 510 5 btm and was wondering how good did it pull?? I'm in central Pa and we have mostly clay ground side hill and I would be plowing some old sod this fall. I was thinking about converting it to a 4 btm. My old 450 pulled 3 16's in the same soil with no problem, so I know my 656 will tug 4. I'm just not sure about 5. What all is involved in converting it to a 4 btm? Thanks!!

Steve: In my case it was also timing. Removing right dual from 1066 and moving inside wheel out was not exactly a fun job. 1066 spread the manure and at same time 656 that would have been sitting idle plowed. I also liked spreading manure on corn stalks and plowing it under as manure rotted the stalks faster that way. Corn stalks also flow through plow beams better at slower speeds, it just seems that at slower speeds the stalks have more time to flow and not plug up. That one alone saves a lot of 4 letter adjectives. I plowed 8" deep with 656 as I did with 1066. I will warn you there are some heavy clays that 656 is not going to handle 5 bottom. I don't think it will with 15.5x38 tires. I found 16.9x38 tres really made a tractor out of my 656 and 560.

Irregardless that 510 plow will be a good buy, the frame is much heavier than the older 540, 550, etc plows. Also when you get the plow, manually trip all the bottoms on plow before plowing, just to make sure they are working. E mail me if you want help with that, I still have a manual on that proceedure.

Steve: My 656 actually did quite well on the 5x16 model 510 plow. I had 16.9x38 rear tires on 656, but no wheel weights or chloride. The 656 plowed most of the time in 2nd gear and ocasionaly 3rd.

When I bought the plow I intended on using behind 1066, however I bought a 12 ton manure spreader duals for 1066. The combination of removing duals plus always wanting to plow at same time as spreading manure made me hitch 656 to the plow oneb day. My 510 plow manual described how easy it was to reduce 5 bottom plow to 4. Only one item IH omited, rusty bolts, torching ty-rod, etc. We had this backed in to shop, I said to Mike a guy who worked for me. Go and try to plow that clay hill behind the barn. If 656 will plow the clay hill then we don't need to reduce plow to 4 bottom. We never did reduce plow to 4 bottom and 656 plowed 250-300 acres every year. As far as I'm concerned plowing in 2nd gear with 5 bottoms probably almost as fast as 3rd gear with 4 bottoms. The slower plowing will also extend wear part life per acre.

Yes by all means I would buy the 510 plow, get a manual for it. If you find in your soil 5 bottom is too much load reduce to 4. Having spare bottom will never hurt anything.

Steve..... ..I pulled our 4-14 540's this spring with our 400. Did use our 706 acouple of times though. The previous owner of the 706 pulled 5-16's with it and never had a problem..... .We will stick to 4's so we can have the option of either the 400 or 706. Our 706 has a D282, so maybe you should try the 5's.....
