Some people have told me not to use detergent oil because it will ruin the seals and the gaskets in the engine. Is this true?? Or can I use it? What oil do some of you guys recomend to use? (1944 M). Is there any other ways to help put a little bit of hp's back into the engine since it is a '44 model tractor. It runs fine and doesn't seem to have a signifigant ammount of power loss but I was just wondering what small things might help. Full tune up recomended? Also doesn't the ole M hold 8 quarts of oil? Thanks guys again!

I though I read somewhere that the concern was using non-detergent oil for years, then switching over to detergent oil. As this may loosen old sludge deposits etc. The point of reference was to find out what was being used by the previous owner and stick with it. Not sure if there is any validity to that.

Detergent oil has been around for a long time and I never heard any farmer or mechanic say it would hurt seals or gaskets. Just don't try switching to SYNTHETIC OIL in your high milage/hours engines. Then you may see all kinds of seals leaking.

Red: I have been using detergent oil close to 30-35 years. I used single viscosity first 20 in winter and 30 in summer, then 15W-40 I used it in 4 cycle lawn mower SA, SM, 300, 130, 504, 560, 656, 1066, Cockshutt 540, John Deere , 5 Chevy trucks 3 Oldsmobles ans two Buicks.

The lawn mower is 28 years old and has always mowed a 1/4 acre, never rebuilt a diesel under 10,000 hours, the cars and trucks all went 200,000 300,000 miles. The old Farmall 300 is now on it's 6th set of pistons and sleeves. I'll bet that old tractor has 25,000 hours on it.

All the old timers around here swear by 30 weight in the summer.
Some of the younger guys say the new technology oil is no threat to the engines however the majority of the old goats would dislocate a shoulder before they would put that new fangle stuff in their machines. Wisdom seems to be on the side of the old guys who have been doing fine with the stuff that was on the market when the tractor's were built.
Just my ha pennys worth.

I'm 65 and I have dislocated both shoulders -- has nothing to do with oil. We used detergent oil in the 50's -- what's new fangled about it? These days unless you live further north than Hugh does, just use 15W-40.

CNKS says he has two dislocated shoulders and you go shooting him in the foot? Sheesh!

I'm now using the Mobil 1 synthetic 15-40 variant formulated for high mileage engines in all the tractors and lawn tractors and the old pickup. Has special goodies inside to keep old seals and gaskets from leaking. First tried a synthetic in the mid 70's. Was amazed by the lack of wear on the main and rod bearings compared to normal mineral oil for the same time on an engine. Haven't switched back.

I still have a jug of 30W non detergent around to use in the oil bath air cleaners, 'cause it's cheap. Otherwise, the stuff that goes in the engines and rear ends is synthetic and multi weight. I'm a mere kid of 57 in this discussion, but have a feeling that doesn't make much difference, as my years of really liking to do engine rebuilds to pick up speed and power are behind me -- and now the objective is to keep 'em running forever with minimal maintenance.

Steve: If you follow the thread you will see Lone Wolf is the guy I shot in foot. CNKS came along after I. Read my original post.

Hugh,

Sorry, my fault. A quick read said to me that it was a good place to have some fun and make a joke. Even if you had shot CNKS in the foot (figuratively) I'm sure he and everyone else would have taken it in the best sort of way in any event.

These questions about oil always bring the most outrageous and varied responses -- almost like talking about a religion -- so it's kinda fun to stir the pot.

Thanks for setting me straight. You take care, and hope you're having a good summer up there. Down here, we've had monsoons for the past month or two. Might as well have made a rice paddy as tried to plant anything this Spring.

Steve

With two dislocated shoulders, it is hard to even hold a gun, much less hit my foot, but, I do it pretty often anyway.

Ha ha ha... good one!

What can I say. I have a lot of days that go exactly the same way. LOL, or laughing out loud is what they say, but when I read what you wrote, it literally was true.

You have a good one - and here's wishing that we both get through tomorrow without shootin' ourselves in the foot. If we don't get into any discussions about oil or politics or religion; we might do OK.

If you are going to be working it use 30wt.

If it is a show tractor 10w30 will be ok for year round.

Lot's of discussions on this in the archives, the last consensus, but I'm sure not the final was 15w-40 all year around. I get only about a 100 hours per year on my main tractor, certainly not enough to warrant changing oil twice a year. Besides, the mfg'r of my MF says 15w-40

Yes, it holds 8 quarts, I use detergent oil in all of my tractors, I prefer straight 30wt. for warm weather, and 20 for cold weather, but a lot of people use multi-weight oil and get along just fine.
As for the power question, make sure the plugs, points, etc. are in good shape, and properly set, ignition timing makes a big differance, I like to set it by ear, and how the tractor responds. also, if the governor is not allowing maximum rpm, the horsepower will be down.
