Continuing a long term restoration on my 1943 H, I worked my way to the front wheels. Found that one hub was original clamp type, other was later bolt on. Found a second clamp type but discovered that the inner bearing race (the big one) on both clamp hubs was loose, i.e. would rotate by hand within the hub. Both outer races are OK, i.e.smooth and static. One inner and one outer bearing set required replacement.

I have ordered a couple of inner races and the circular oil seal ring which is pressed in ouside the race (#7 in the IT manual on P-10)

Question #1: Is it likely that the wear permitting the rotation is confined to the machined steel race, or is the cast iron hub also worn? I have had one opinion from a tractor mechanic that the hub may be worn too...

If the hub is also worn, and the new race doesn't fit snugly, is there any remedy aside from Lock-tite?

Question #2:

What is the preferred method of removing the oil ring seals...i.e , should they be tapped out from
the inside, or should the be yanked out from the outside???

Both hubs have what appears to be a sheet metal seal inside the outer bearing race and one also has the seal inside the inner bearing race. These do not appear on any schematics of the H axle that I have seen, so I assume they are aftermarket..they are also apparently non-functional as the axle hole is extremely distorted and would not work as a seal....

Question#3:
Should I remove these while I am working on the races??

Any and all help is most appreciated...

Regarding question #1 about the race spinning in the hub--you can take a center punch around the area in the hub where the race presses in and make several punch marks. This will raise the iron up and make the race fit tighter. It wouldn't hurt to use loc-tite as well, I believe the green loc-tite is for bearings and shafts, sorry, I can't recall the number though.

I have a whole lower bolster, hubs, bearings, wheels, rims and truck tires, I'd sell the whole works $125. It came off a 350. Only if you live in the Northwest and can come pick it up, don't want the hastle of shipping..LIve in the Idaho panhandle

There are no cures for worn hubs that are fool proof, you can try Loctite 609 or 635 that might work for this, the bearings have stamped tin parts on the outer and inner bearings to keep grease from migrating away from bearings, part number 60288D & 60289D, also we used to add 43828D felt washers next to seals to help keep mud and water out of wheels in severe service, it sounds like the old girl has had some use since it was built if the hub style doesnt match. This was a common problem on them, no one ever overlubed their bearings.
