using 350 today doing some bush hog work in pasture. cutting heavy thick grass and some weeds. after about an hour of use the pto was dying. pto is live so if i stepped on clutch it would regain its full speed only to die a few seconds later down the row. the tractor did not seem to lose power just the pto. never had this happen after 2 years of owning it.

If the PTO shaft is still spinning at full speed and the mower is not cutting then it is the slip clutch on the mower that needs to be tightened,

If the PTO shaft is slowing down when the going gets tough and the engine is still up to speed then the bands in the PTO need to be adjusted. Check your owners manual for this procedure.

GOOD LUCK

Are you sure that it is the tractor? Some of those bush hogs had a slip clutch in the drive train of the mower, to protect the tractor if you hit something solid.

Sounds like the pto clutch needs adjusted. Pushing in on the clutch stopped the mower from having to cut anything new so it speeded back up once the mower cleared of grass.
