Howdy all,

Dad(75 yrs)came out for a visit and asked me about changing out the condensor on his "H".

Has anybody created and / or posted a tutorial on tune-ups for a H? I've been over at the N board 'since 99, but I can't picture the mag set-up on his tractor and it's 2300 miles away.

He mentions having something to do with a fiber (maybe bakelight) plate that covers the condensor. Is this right? Does it just pop off or is it fastened in some way?

I appreciate the help. His may be red and mine are grey, but at least they are all old iron!

Scott

Scott, I'm over here from the N board too!
I just got a Farmall "C" a few weeks ago, so I don't know much yet...but.....when you take the distributor cap off, there is a bakalite (sp?) or plastic plate that fits over the points and condensor etc, that I assume is to keep them clean and dry.
It just lifts up and out after you take your rotor button off..... ...course this is a distributor and not a mag.
If you have a TCS store near you, stop and look at the tune up kit for a Farmall.
Hope this will help !

G'day mate !

If it has a mag I think the condensor can be removed by removing the nut that holds the primary wire on the side of the mag. Then you pull the condensor and washers out. I'm a little foggy on this since I only have one tractor with a mag and haven't had it apart but once. To get to the points, remove the rotor; could also be called a bakelite plate; then the distributer body, the thing that has the clips attached to it. You can also see the condensor at this time. For a distributer, remove the rotor, and a plastic (bakelite?) plate snaps out and you are at the points and condensor.

There are tune-up videos available from this site. I havn't seen them so I don't know if they cover your Dad's condensor.
It sounds like he has a magneto on his H? If so, that fiber washer comes out from the inside, he has to take the top off the magneto and loosen the condensor (there's a screw holding the back end of it), slide it back to disconnect it from the wire to the points, and the fiber washer will come out with it. It's not hard to do, but it's hard to explain here. Gotta be careful not to drop anything into the magneto.
BTW, the magneto on an H is the same one used on A's, B's, BN's, H's, M's & others. The instructions on one will cover them all.

Right, I forgot about the top of the magneto.
