I found a M farmall for sale that codes out to be a 1940 model, the serial number is 5 numbers and has a fbk prefix, what puzzles me is that it has a X 1 following the number. It also has a live hydrualic pump and a vertical distrubutor in the normal location to allow it to clear the oil filter. Can anyone identify this machine and tell me about the strange distributor adapter and what the X 1 means? thanks

X-1 means your tractor came from the factory equipped to burn gasoline. If the tractor has a live pump, it has been added on, would not have been standard equipment, or even available as an option. The distributor is a Delco-Remy, very common. Tractor would have originally been equipped with a magneto ignition system, but most of them were converted to a distributor.

Thanks for the info, most of the old machines around here were distillate rigs. I thought the live power was a retrofit, I have a similar but hard line version on my 300's. but the vertical distributor had me scratching my head. Is there someplace to find the Serial # "other" codes in case i run up against this again.

Get Guy Fay's "International Harvester Tractor Data Book", has all the codes in it. Your local book store or Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.

Although the delco looks similar on the outside, when you go the store for new points, condensor, etc., you will need to tell the parts man that you have a delco dist., the internal parts will not interchange with the I.H. distributors, nor will the dist. cap.
