I just totally rewired my super H according to BobM's wiring diagram(Thanks Bob) I am using an 8 volt battery, 8.25 volts accross battery terminals when engine is off 9.25-10v when running. Ammeter reads -4 amps when the switch is pulled out but when the tractor starts the ammeter flutters between -20 and 0 amps New regulator and polarized Is the tractor charging properly and I have a faulty ammeter or do I have something wired incorrectly

Do you have a small clamp on amp inductive ampmeter you could them measure the current and see what it is without disconecting anything

It sounds to me as if it is time for a new ammeter.

The voltage looks good. This means your battery is charging properly. Did you by chance switch to a negative ground system? In any event, you need to switch all wires on your ammeter. Or you could just accept the fact that discharge means charge, and vice-versa on your ammeter.

When I originally installed the ammeter it was backwards Showed charge when I pulled the on-off switch, so I changed the wires Now it shows -4 amps when I pull it on. And the gauge vibrates rapidly between 0 and -20A when the motor is running

A –4 amp reading with the ignition on and the motor stopped says your ammeter is hooked up right and is working correctly with the motor off. However the ammeter vibrating between 0 to –20 with a voltage reading of 9.5 –10 is puzzling…..the ammeter indication is battery is discharging, but the voltage reading says it’s charging.

Presuming your voltmeter is accurate (a safe assumption based on your “engine stopped” voltage reading) then the battery IS being charged with the motor running. That means your charging system is basically healthy. But it also means ammeter reading is somehow outta whack on the charge side. A possible cause is charging circuit wire running too close to the ammeter inside the switch box. If not that then suggest swapping the ammeter for a known good one and see what it reads.
