I figured out my running/starting poorly problem is a blocked fuel line at the tank. Is it hard to remove the tank? 4 bolts or so??

Does anyone have experience cleaning/resealing the tank with commercially available cleaners/sealers? The archives have a mix of answers dating back to 2002. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I tried all sorts of methods to clean the gas tank on my M, it was really a mess, I finally tried the muriatic acid trick, used it full strength, and that did the trick. If you use this method, be extremely carefull, this is nasty stuff.
Another trick I learned, after you get the tank clean, install a riser pipe in the fuel inlet of the sediment bowl assembly, about 1 inch tall, and then a stainless or brass fine mesh screen on top of the riser pipe, sticking up about another 1 inch or so, the reason for this is because the tank is never 100% free from rust.

It's been a while since I had mine off but I seem to remember having to take the valve cover off too to get me that last little bit to get it in or out. Had mine cleaned at a radiator shop, it also needed the neck resoldered so I had the pros do the whole thing, came back looking like new for $100.

yes, the tank comes off pretty easy with 4 bolts holding it, but as I recall, you have to remove the dash first, and before you can remove the dash you need to remove the steering wheel. If you have power steering, make sure you don't hammer on the end of the steering shaft, as you'll risk buggering up the seals in your steering valve body. Mine came off with a puller and one light tap to the side of the steering wheel hub. You will also need to remove the cotter pin holding the little bellcrank on the bottom end of the speed control shaft, I think. Not a big deal, but not an easy one to replace if you got big hands. For sealing the tank, I went to a local hot rod shop and got some tank sealer, don't recall the name, but it was not Eastwood, Kreme or any of the other big names. I just cleaned the tank with hot soapy water, rinsed with hot water a couple times, dried it thoroughly, then poured the sealer in and sloshed it around until I figured all the surfaces were coated, let that dry for a day, then did it again, just to be sure.
