My new 584 is not cranking, I had the fuel filters drained and was unplugging a clogged line when I tried to start it. The tractor was sounding like the battery was worn down, hesitated to begin cranking but then it did after trying again earlier. I then found the fuel problem, cleared the lines, re-primed the the filters and tried starting and got nothing. No electrical clicks, no cranking, completely dead. Almost like a safety switch was not made although nothing had been moved since my last start attempt. Any help is appreciated.

Jeff

Yes, no corrosion at all, I had a battery jumped to it, the battery was showing a medium charge remaining, whatever that means.

the only saftey switch is on the clutch on that tractor. try to jump the solinoid[ connect the little terimal to the battery terimal] see if it will turn over.

I saw that switch. It had 2 connectors, one of which was disconnected before this problem surfaced. Should I reconnect it or jump one of those wires?

jeff;

the saftey switch is a break in the wire to the solinoid wire when you push in on the clutch it completes the circuit [oprerator presense switch] and energizes the starter. I would try to reconnect it what do you have to lose, if it starts to smoke,usally where the wire quits burnning is where the problem lies. I would suspect that someone has already hacked the wireing harness already that is why you are having the problem that you are having now.
on the solinoid there will be a terminal for the battery cable[big one] and the terminal for the wire that comes from the ignition switch which passes through the clutch saftey switch [little one] jump those terminals with a piece of wire and see if it will turn over. if it does it will rule out the starter and solinoid. then you will need to look into a wiring harness. one other problem that those tractors had is under the steering console where the fuse box is located there is a wiring loom conector for the wiring harness if this tractor has set out side alot there is the possibility that this connection point has gotten corroded that might be a point to rule out before you look into a harness. the rest of it is basic tractor wiring and is not to complicated. Good Luck

Most farmers with the 84 and 95 Series tractors have cut those 2 wires and twisted them together with a wire nut. The switch must have been another wonderful Lucas part.
