Farmall A gets HOT

I we have a Farmall a that we use to mow. We had the radiator fixed last year and it still gets hot. Do Farmall A's have a water pump that could be bad or how is water circulated? Does the radiator cap have to be tight? Right now it is very loose and if you mow on a hill water will run out. The radiator should be clean and functional. Any ideas? Thanks.

Matt

Take the radiator off and by using air and pressure water clean the block. the lower outlet will have to be removed and you will be able to look in the block and see better there are four holes at the bottom of the sleeve that alows water to flow past and get to the radiator these are probably blocked with crud. T his is very common with these engines. Mite want to add a water pump at this time. It bolts on instead of the lower outlet and then get a longer fan belt and away you go this has been done many times you dont need a thermostat nor a different cap just put in on and go.

gene: What you seem to be saying is that over time there is a build up in that block that will just not come out, short removing all the pistons, sleeves, etc. Am I right? My Super A has been going for 50 years now, and is indeed one of the later models that came presurized. My tractor is all original and as far as I can see is working as it always did. With these and with out a temp guage you are not absolutely sure what temp it is operating at. My tractor will gurgle for 30 seconds or so after shutt down, but it has always done that. Are you suggesting as these tractors age, installing a water pump wouldn,t be a bad idea? Just for nothing more than being on the safe side. I also get the feeling that here in the north where using anti-freeze has always been a must, these systems have stood the test of time much better. Speaking of the test of time, I sincerely wonder if the IH engineers that designed these tractors ever believed they would still be working 50+ years later.

I was recently at CaseIH dealership with my 1963 - 140 water pump. Customer next to me looked at my pump and said," its original, we have a tractor at home less than ten years old not much more hp than 140 and it is on the third water pump." I guess inflation didn't maintain quality.

We had the same problem after adding a mower deck to our A. So we had the Radiator flushed and it still got hot. We fixed the problem by timing the engine now it runs good and doesn't overheat.
try that and see if it works for you.

You might check for a colapes rad hose, sometimes the inside of the hose gets to the point that the syphon sucks it in which in turn stops the flow of water.I have a SA with no pump and you can work it all day and never boil over. The level of water needs to be down out of the neck so it will flow easier. Also flush your engine good but unhook the rad,you dodn't want all that rust in your clean rad. GOOD LUCK!!! WILL

Matt,
To my knowledge, Farmall A's did not have a water pump. The Farmall Super A's did. The cooling system on the A is a thermosiphon system. The way I understand it is the differences between hot and cool parts for the cooling system cause the circulation of heat to the radiator where it is cooled down. A person with a Phd in thermodynamics could most likely explain it better. I heard that the radiator cap needs to ne tight for the system to work at 100%. Someone needs to confirm that. May want to flush out the block when you get a chance to. May also want to check the radiator for plugs both inside and out. I am currently restoring 2 Farmall A's they both heat the water up pretty quick. Best of luck to you..... Gerald

Hi Matt. Just a little A story for you. When I bought our A we completely overhauled it including new 3-1/8" sleeves and pistons. (Pictures posted last winter in Parts & Pieces) For most things the A worked great until we used it on the disk in new plowing. It got so hot that it wouldn't hardly run. Always having to add antifreeze was another problem. Finley I got a water pump from a Super C and put it on the A and what a DEFFERENCE that made. Now it never gets hot no matter how hard we work it and don't have to add antifreeze any more. Because the M&W hand clutch went out on my MD we baled with the A last Friday with a wagon behind and over 100 bales on the wagon. Going up a hill in our field we had to steer with the brakes on the last round but that A just kept on baling and digging. Never heated! I have a lot of respect for that A now. I will post a picture in the tractor photos. ADD A WATEER PUMP if your going to use your A for heavy loads. It's worth every penny you pay for the pump and good luck with your A Matt.
