Hi I saw an ad for a Farmall MD and was wondering what it is worth. It says that it is complete and has good tin but has a head problem. What would it be worth? Are these tractors rare? What would it cost to fix the head?Any help would be appreciated.

Matt

Matt, I paid $950 for my MD about 5 years ago in Minnesota. It was in running condition, but not good running condition. The sheetmetal was good and everything was there. Like the others said, I restored this MD and spent far more money than I ever expected to, especially on the engine and diesel system. Now that it is in good running condition it is really a great tractor to drive. It really impresses people when you show them how it starts on gasoline and then you switch to diesel. Roger

I have a 1951 MD that I paid 2500 for. It needed help when I got it. It wouldn't start on gas and the guy pull started it on diesel. Needless to say I did a complete overhaul on it and it cost more than what I wanted. I paid too much for the tractor for the condition that it was in. I'm not sure how much it would cost to have the head repaired. Hopfully the head isn't cracked. The old diesels are getting harder to find and they are more expensive than the gas tractors. I'm glad I got an MD though. It is a fun tractor to use.

It was not uncommon for IH diesels of that era to have head problems. The third valve used for running on gas made for thin walls between the valves which made them susceptible to cracking. A replacement head will cost a few hundred dollars, but they're a great tractor for restoration or general use. There's nothing like switching from the purr of gasoline to the bark of diesel on a quiet summer morning. One note - I was taught to switch back to gasoline for a couple minutes before shutting down. This reduces chamber temperature and helps minimize the chances of cracking the head.
