I am a real IH freak and I real big fan of the 86 series but I would choose the 5488 over the 1586 hands down. The 5488 had the DTI 466 in it which stands for diesel turbo intercooled. This is the largest Melrose Park Diesel, it is basically the same as the 1586's DT 436 except it has a few more cubes, an intercooler, and an inline pump. The transmision featured the STS transmission which stood for synchro tri six. This tranny was fully synchronized and had clash free shifting. The range transmission was three speed with a high medium and low. The speed transmission was a 6 speed. The six speed was in a Z pattern with power shifting between 1 and 2 then beween 3 and 4 and then between 5 and 6. This was accomplished by basically using a torque amplifier that shifted with an electric valve. This tractor was the first farm tractor to use on board computer technology to monitor engine, transsmission, and hydraulic functions. Another featured with the Mid Mount wet Master Clutch which was smooth as glass. Dealers actually set up demo's of the 88's (technically called the 50 series)with an extended draw bar. They would place a pitcher of water on a stump and place a glass on the ground behind the stump with a line on it. The clutch was so smooth you could actually tip the pitcher and fill the glass to the line drawn on it without spilling and another drop! The reverse flow air was also a spectacular feature. In addition to keeping the radiator clean, it also drew hot air from the engine compartment out and around the radiator. This kept cab and engine compartment temperatures low. The Control Center Cab was a carry over from the 86 series Pro Ag Line and I have never been in a nicer IH cab than this one.

Both are well known tractors around here. Both had ups and downs. The 15's rear ends, the 54's trans. I have been inside a couple of each. They both weigh alot 15 weighted up with duals in her field dress will weigh in over 18,000. The 54 dressed the same will be 19- 20,000. Believe me I've had both on the scale. Thanks

If your choice is between a 1586 and a 5488, definitaly go with the 5488!

1586:
only has 3 gears (plus hi and low and TA - 12 total forward speeds possible - TA is powershifted, but other gears are not synchronized)
63 gallon fuel tank
161 horsepower on the PTO
138 on drawbar
Turbo Diesel of 436 cubic inches
weighs 13,300 lbs

5488:
3 ranges and 6 gears in each range (1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 powershifted, 2-3 and 4-5 are synchronized)
87 gallon fuel tank
187 horsepower on the PTO
164 on drawbar
Turbo Diesel Intercooled of 466 cubic inches
weighs 14,600 lbs

Other items of interest: the 5488 has reverse cooling, blows air out the front of the radiator. The radiator plugs less on these, but I have heard of fan bearing problems. 1586 shifting is on the left hand side and hydraulics on the right, 5488 shifting is on the right hand side (don't remember where hydraulic controls are). Both have doors on both sides, both available with 3-point. Both should/could have 20.8x38 tires. Both have proven IH DT-400 series engines (be sure to change the coolant filter/treatment or they will cavitate).

Just a few specs and some personal preferences.

Make sure it is a later production 5488, earlier ones had an update for the trans. Early one will have rotary pump all the rest got an inline. Micro switches under the cab are the thing needs fixin on these, either dead, needin adjustment or plugs cleaned. If it overheats easy pull the radiator and have it cleaned, in hot weather take the side doors off and store carefully in the shed, helps keep temps down.
Our 1586 kept ruining its brakes.

im sure i will step on someones toes but, the 15 has a bad rep around here,, not the most desireable rear end, only 3 speed tranny, the 5488 with the updates are the same as the 7110 7120 magnums, ive been told, i have 2 5488 tractors, real good machines,
