I have a 1066 that makes a "popping" or "puffing" sound; sounds like an old single cylinder engine. I investigated and the sound is deafening when I remove the secondary (the largest one) air filter. I think it's maybe an exhaust valve sticking, but I don't have any noticeable smoke. Any ideas?
Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be taking a look at the valves.

If it pops out the intake its almost always the exhaust valve not opening and making the exhaust pop through the intake when it does open. Usual causes are a broken rocker arm, bent or broken push rod, or a worn off camshaft lobe, and in that order of popularity. Good luck.

Bought a 1586 on a farm sale cheap because it had a poofing sound. Got it home and took the valve cover off and found one push rod was wore out. Replaced push rod, Adjusted all the valves and 2 years later it's still running. Be careful pulling push rods out because suction will pull up on the lifter and then it will fall over and then it's a bear to get them to set right again. Hole is to small to pull them out the top.

Another guy on this forum just had that same problem with a 986. His was a bent pushrod. Could be a damaged intake valve or about anything related to the valvetrain, I'd start out by pulling the rocker arm cover and having a look. If it's a simple fix that's great, but just remember to adjust all the rocker arms while you're in there.

Popping in the intake system is more likely an intake valve. A diesel compression check is needed, or a leak down test. I would crack fuel lines loose one at a time to discover which cylinder. Then I would pull the valve cover and look at the springs on that cyl. if they are OK, I would loosen the valve rockers, and remove the pushrods from that cyl. Then use a rubber compression test adapter,or gutted old injector) to make an air fitting to put air pressure (100psi or more is OK) and listen for air escaping. If it is an intake, it will hiss through the filter as it seems to be doing. if it hisses in the exhaust, it is the exhaust valve, if in the oil pan, it may be a scored piston. Check it soon or spend bigger bucks. Best of luck, JimN
