After doing some baling...I stopped the tractor and it was hard to get out of gear.....then I tried to put it in any gear and the engine grunts like it wants to move but doesnt when I release the clutch..... pushing in the clutch returns the engine to normal....

Last week I adjusted the TA and clutch according to the PM manual...still grinds into gears while stopped at low rpms....

Is the tranny stuck?? do I need to take the platform off??
this is my main tractor so I need to get it fixed asap.....

Thanks..

I pulled the shifter and slid them to line up...The tip of the shifter has some braze on it( pretty worn)....may need done again if I have this happen...

Tractor vet -- I turned the TA to clutch lingage in 2 turns seems to help....tractor coasts like you said also...TA is a little harder to get in the catch when pulling the lever but I can play with that later....

Thanks to all the guys for the help....

my 560 has done this several times. If you don't want to pull the shifter out take the plate off in front of steering console, where the belt pully would be, and move the forks with a screwdriver. Later if it's hard to take out of gear pull the ta lever back first, that will take the pressure off of the gears.

Thanks everybody...that sounds like what happened...I did force it out of gear...
tractor vet...I did notice after doing a book adjustment that there is a lot of wear in the linkage...I'll try what you said...

I did notice it wouldnt coast out of where I park when I unblock the wheels to go work....I thought I had the brakes too tight...I was going to put new discs on before baling but have to wait till I get seals...housings had oil in themone had the brakes wet.....need to get a seal but how does the inner friction plate come off to get at the seal??

I'm off to search the archives if it will come up...thanks again

Yep do like the others have said and pull the three bolts on the shifter and before ya do anything LOCK THE BRAKES thenget it out of gear and replace the shifter maken sure that it is in the slot. Next you do not have the T/A linkage set correctly as i have found over the years that with ware ya can not go by the book. So here is what ya do on the link that goes from the clutch arm to the T/A arm remove the headed pin loosen the lock nut and screw it in two turns to start put the pin back in along with the cotter pin BUT do not bend it over yet fire up the tractor and drive it up a incline -hill and shove the clutch in if the tractor just sit there give it a nother turn and try again when it rools back it is good to go and should come out of gear everytime ya shove the clutch down real easy . as long as ya have main clutch free travel and it comes out of gear your good to go.

This is a common problem with all 4 of my Farmalls from time to time if I try to force them out of gear, the end of the shifting lever wears over time and if to much pressure is applied it will slide out of the notch in the shifting forks. All that you need do is block the rear wheels to take the pressure off gears, remove the three bolts holding the shift lever tower on, lift the tower off, make sure the area around the tower is clean so that you don't get anything down in the forks, now move each fork with a large screw driver to the center position, finally inspect the shift lever for wear, if needed weld a couple of beads on the end and grind to match the shape of the level. Install the tower making sure that the end of the lever slides smoothly but isn't sloppy any more. Spent three hours rebuilding the tower on my 300 Famall this weekend as the pin threw the lever had pop one of the plugs that held it in place and it got lost and the lever needed to be a little longer. Good luck, Larry.

If the trans is in a gear (proobably the gear it was last in) and is then shifted into another, it will be locked up when the clutch is let out. If it is in that gear, it will move when the clutch is let out in neutral. To repair, it may be necessary to pull the gear shift out as indicated below. The shift rails can be moved to alignment with a big screwdriver. Once aligned, it is best to weld up the bottom corners of the tab on the end of the stick. There are pictures in the archives, but the essence is the tab should be made a bit bigger, then groung down to just work well. If it is hard to get out of gear, try pushing the clutch all the way to its stop. this releases both the TA clutch, and the regular clutch, fully. Full clutch release is important. if it still comes out of gear hard, the TA may need further adjustment. Again the archives are important. Good luck. JimN

Pop off the shifter Look to see if it is still in gear. If the slides are not lined up. Stick a screwdriver to line them up. If it is stuck in gear. If this happens a lot weld the ball on the shifter.
