A while back I noticed when doing some research that bolts are suppose to be marked on the head according to their hardness. At that time I was getting some at Ace and noticed some were marked and some werent. The Ace has since changed to Do It Best and now none of the bolt heads are marked according to hardness. I went to Fastenall and every bolt they had was marked like it was suppose to be. I thought this was law that they had to be marked the with lines on top of the bolt. These must be an import and thus they are getting around the law some way?

Tractor supply stores in my area have grade 5 and 8 bolts that sell by the pound and they come out to be a lot cheeper than price per each bolts at most hardware stores.

I keep 5's and 8's on hand, however I do not find 2's to be so worthless. If you're using the right size and keep them tight, they hold a lot.

No marks means Grade 2, period.

If you're buying bolts from Grade 5 or 8 bins that have no marks on them, you are being screwed.

There isnt any seperate bins for differant grades here other than the grade 8 ones that are a bronze color. Thats why I would dig thru them and get the ones that were marked with the three lines. But now they must all be those #2 soft bolts since they arent marked on the head with any lines.

But you know the average person wouldnt know the differance and would just figure a bolt is a bolt.

If there is no marking I would have to assume that they are a grade 2 "soft" bolt that is only good for the lightest fastening chores.

Randy, our true value here in town still carries grade 5 and 8 bolts. They make an absolute killing onm them, but when u needem, ya need them. Going to fastenal or tsc costs more in gas then the difference.

As the rest said, if they arent marked they are about worthless besides the lightest of duty work.

The bolts with NO head markings are the "softest" bolts made... probably good enough for holding the wheels on a doll buggy.
