I have a question about building engines with non original parts. I was always taught that an connecting rod and piston are balanced to the crankshaft. So when a piston and connecting rod from one engine can be made to fit in another engine that connecting rod and piston have to be made to weigh the same as the original ones did. Please help me to better understand this.

I personaly wouldn;t be concerned when swiching pistons and rods between same type tractor engines, as they are slow running and balance is not as critical as in a high speed automotive engine...My thoughts on it???

It depends on whether the engine is ballanced. Farmall Letter (and other)engines have ballance by having two pistons going up, and two going down. this means that if mismatched (between them) pistons were installed there would be problems. JimN

No doubt that balanced engine is best but I have seen old letter series tractors run for thousands of hours on a low tech barnyard overhaul.

It sure helps if they are made to be the same weight and then balance the rest of the rotating members . Balancing and engine is the cheapest hp. that you will ever get.
