I'm also a little disappointed in the compression on this SH. Was 95 across the board, adjusted the valves, all the exhausts were too tight (rotators?). It went up to 100. My not rebuilt SMTA shows 115, my rebuilt firecrater H shows 130+. What is the lower limit before you pop the head and pan and start looking for more? No water or gas in oli. Nice and black and thick.3/4 inch of sludge in pan. Why do guys do that?

I think most farmers wait until oil use is excessive, or it burns a valve. 100 is fine, you likely have standard pistons. I all depends on what satisfies you. You really don't need to be concerned about compression until you get a 10% difference between cylinders, in your case that is 90, sounds to me like your engine is in pretty good shape.

I have a 44 H it is a X1. she is still giving me 130 lbs across the board except #3 has 125lbs. When I saw those numbers i was so happy i bought it. the book says the comp, rat. shouls be 5.9 to 1 on a all gas (head #8043) and the kero burners is 4.9 to 1. I know the supers h is 6.1 to 1 As for the next gen just gonna sell em it is not gonna happen here. I cant keep my kids away from them! they all want my tractors!

My H has about 100lbs of compression and our Super H has 145lbs on all four, not sure if its been rebuilt or not but I think thats pretty good for a Super H ?

Gordon: I wouldn't be awfully concerned about the 100#. I've worked tractors for years running below that. Yes I know you'll see 120 to 130 when new or right after rebuilds, but just how long do these old gassers stay that way if your working them.

Right now for example, my 130 is running at 85#. I know I should pop in a new engine kit, however it plows my snow and when I hook it to and implement there is little difference between it and my 140 at 115#. 140 will last a bit longer on hard lugging.

I think, I've also answered your second question,"Why do folks do this". It's old age, the tractor changes from a money making tool to something that gives you a few fond memories. I see this starting myself, I'd just as soon go to the shop and look at them as use them. If your not going to use them why spend money. You know the next generation is just going ship them off to an auction when your gone.

Hey Hugh, I thought it was interesting when you said "You know the next generation is just going to ship them off to an auction when your gone." Which kind of made me laugh because my grandpa says that all the time about all his antique stuff that he has and new things he sees that he wants to buy and he kind of just laughs about it too. Just a warm thought I had about grandpa.

Josh: I somehow have a feeling that is not going to happen. Just for insurance I'm working on the mind of a one year old grandson.
