1206 hydraulic system questions ???

On a 1206 Turbo IH (sorry, I don't have a manual):

1.Is hydraulic oil or hytran fluid used in the system?

2. What is the fluid capacity of this system?

3. How many drain plugs (and locations if you know them) will enable me to get out as much of the fluid as possible?

Every year I go through the same problem in that the oil seems to get contaminated with water. The tractor is just used for spring seeding and a bit of fall harrowing, etc. By the next spring, the fluid is milky and the filter plugs up (with water I assume) and the whole steering system shuts down. Sometimes, just changing the filter does the trick, other years (like this one) it appears as if the fluid will have to be changed again. The tractor was used for countless years without this problem and it has just been in the last 6-7 years that this has happened. Anyone know what's happening?

Like the Vet said, there are 5 plugs, but keep in mind that the final drives are totally seperate from the transmission case, unless it has been updated. The update was done by removing each final drive and drilling a 1/2" hole through the trans case, which would allow oil from the transmission case out to the final drive. See the pipe plug about halfway up the backside of each final drive? That's the check/fill plug. After you have drained and refilled the trans, remove these plugs and see if the final drives have oil in them, if so, it's been updated, if not, you'll have to fill them up through the check plug. Keep in mind that they may not be full right up to the check plug, as the oil level in the trans case is only about as high as the 1000 RPM PTO shaft.

I got a fill volume of 64 litres from a dealership so that would be about 17 US gallons. He didn't know if that included the rear drives or was just the tranny part.

Was the upgrade with the drilled holes a factory thing or was it just done in repair shops? I wonder why that was done, maybe for simple convenience?

Anyways, I think I will drain everything (all 5 plugs) and then put 2 pails of hytrans into the tranny part. Then see if it spills into the axle housings, and then go from there to top things up.

Thanks for your help everyone.

The tractor has 5 drain plugs , 2 under the transmissions one on the rearend under the draw bar and one on each final drive . She will hold about 16 -20 gallon as i can not give ya a down to the last drop quanity as i do not have my books layen here in front of me . As to the water problem that is caused by letting the tractor JUST SET . Condensation is your problem just like a big toilet tank it sweats inside and makes it's owen water.

By no means am I an expert like other folks here but sounds to me with that kind of frequency that there is a cover off or some type of easy access point for rain water, etc. Does it set outside? If so, can you shed it for a year and try that?
