Super H oil-burning

I have a 1954 Super H Farmall, and have been using it to pull a 12-foot grain drill this spring. The engine smokes a lot when pulling (out of the crankcase tube) and burns about a quart of oil per 12-hour day of running. Looks as though the motor needs rings, etc....can someone give me an idea of what this will cost at an independent shop? Also, other than planting wheat, the tractor does not do much the rest of the year, so is there some type of oil conditioner that I can add to get by for awhile? I should add that the tractor has noticeably lost some power over the past few years. Thanks for any advice.

You might try adding a product called Lucas Oil Conditioner (Sold at auto parts stores and now I see Wal Mart has it). You can use as much as you want (according to the manufacturer). All the tractor people around here swear by it. It is very slick oil product that seems to reduce oil consumption. I use it in my 51 M and 41 A and it seems to have done the job. I use two quarts in each engine.

An engine kit will cost around $500 to $700, depending on the completeness of the kit. You could probably double that amount to include the labor at a shop, and if any outside machine shop work needs to be done, you could be looking at an additional $1,000.

Yeah,

It used to be that the machine shop charges for the wrist pin fit, crank polish and head work was minimal.

It'll plain rock your world nowadays. :>(

Yeah,

Gas engines just plain wear out over time, it's the nature of the beast.

Just add your quart of oil a day until it's overhauled. Probably will run a good $1500-$2K to do it up right.

And then, of course, one will have almost as much money invested in repairs as the tractor is worth.

So it goes. Few people actually make big money off of what the IRS calls "collectables," be they farm equpipment, radios, or cars...
