Again I know very (just enough to be dangers) about this tractor plan to buy a service manual just want to research to find the best one. What type fluids to use for this tractor engine, hyd, ect I did take the cap off of the res. in front of the hyd. pump and can not see any fluid. How much should be in it and what type also? Guys and Gals I thank you all for any info.
Thanks,
Keith

Be warned that the operator's manual will contain information about oils and fluids that is 30+ years old. A lot has changed in that time.

They probably still call for "Touch Control Fluid" in the touch control. It's no longer available, but don't freak out! Use HyTran, it's better quality oil than anything from 30+ years ago, and won't hurt a thing.

Above all, don't get your knickers in a bunch if you can't find the "exact right" oil. Oil is oil, and as long as you're close on the viscosity, it will not harm your tractor.

Keith: I read your other thread and you best order the manuals PDQ. The original IH operators manual gives good everyday operation advice. For service manuals I have both the IT manual plus the IH Blue Ribbon service manual. Those are all available at Binder Books as well as from other online manual sellers.

In the meantime cap on top of governor is crank case fill hole. Hydraulic fill is on left side of touch control unit. Hyrdaulic is Hy tran or equivilant. Engine crankcase is any good grade motor oil. Steering box, transmission and each final drive is gear oil.

Get the operators manual and pay particular attention to fluid levels, distributor drive gears and greasing. For instance, Hydraulic should only be filled when hydraulic rockshafts are in rear position, over filling will occur if rockshafts are forward.

By the way Jim is right your steering box needs a major overhaul.

The resivoir is not in front of the hydraulic pump. You add Hy Tran or straight weight non detergent motor oil in the box with the lift arms on it. On the left side of the lift unit is a bung that is removed to add hydraulic oil. Fill to within a half inch of top. I would recommend you get an IT manual. The one you need is manual number IH 201. They are not perfect, but will have most info you need in it. Any good motor oil is OK, I use straight SAE 30 year round in all my Farmalls. The rear end should have at least a good 90 weight gear oil in it. BTW you can order manuals from this site, look to left of page and click on tractor manuals. They are also available at TSC and other farm supply stores or Case IH.
