Rusty Is correct. If your tractor is sludged up it needs to be cleaned (my response below). If it is clean, modern oils are sooooo o much better that there is no persuasive reason to use the older oils, or non-detergent. JimN

I would not recommend using detergent oil - if it still has the original oil seals in it. Use SAE 30 NON-DETERGENT oil. it will save your seals and will not disolve sludge in the engine that could clog up things.

I strongly doubt that there are even 1 out of 1000 Hs or Ms still in use that have non-detergent oil in them.

Virtually all modern multi-weight oils are detergent oils. Detergent oil, cleans the soot of the internal engine parts and suspends the soot particles in the oil. The particles are too small to be trapped by the oil filter and stay in the oil until you change it. These particles are what makes the oil turn darker. These tiny particles do not harm your engine. When the oil becomes saturated with soot particles and is unable to suspend any more, the particles remain on the engine parts. Fortunately, with the current oil change intervals the oil is changed long before the oil is saturated.

Nondetergent oils are the cheapest oils on the market. Non-detergent oil, such as SAE 30, is not used in modern engines. It is still used in some gasoline engines such as lawnmowers. It suspends very little of the small particles and they remain on the engine parts and accumulate in all areas of the engine.

This is really a question. I need to change the oil in my wife's father's 1963 Farmall1 140 tractor.
What oil should I buy? Also what is the oil capacity of this tractor. I have a Fram Oil Filter (C135) but not sure of what type oil to look for.
The tractor has been restored and is mainly used for light yard work. It is in excellent condition having been well maintained by him when he was alive.

My point was that there are oils out there pressumed to be non-detergent that contain low levels of detergents such as IH low ash.

low ash only contains 10% detergent, many out there contain up to 20%.

If the M is in good shape pick up any decent 10W-30 and pour it in. If its in lousy shape pour in 10W-40. Even the Wal-Mart Super Tech has an API Service rating of SL, much better what was poured in back in 1940s and better then most oils that were out just 10 years ago.

At the left, the top item is manuals. Binders Books is another, The dealer CNH, or CaseIH will also have them. Look below for what oil should I use (a few items below this one. JimN
