Got my 340 industrial home and got in running.I looked up 340 utility and I though it was the same as the industrial a 135 engine about 35hp. Then I run across this on ebay #250091872259 International 340 industrial Tractor 47hp gas or diesel, sales brochure. Is there any way to tell what I have?

47 hp is gross at the flywheel. Engine is a C-135.

Jim,
If the hp is taken at the flywheel would it be the same as a 340 utility? Both would have the c-135 engine and both should have the same hp at the pto?
If this is true than the only things I can find different between the 340 utility and the 340 industrial is the grill, the yellow color, and the oval badge.I'm probably going to restore this even thought I prefer the red and white over the yellow. If anyone know of any other difference please let me know.
Thanks for all your help, Kirk

I asked the guy from ebay what engines are listed in the brochure for the international 340 industrial tractor. He said- gas 4cyl 135 cu in and diesel 4cyl 166 cu in. My tractor is 4cyl gas. So how can produce 47hp?

According to the Nebraska Tractor Tests,
the Farmall 340 with a gas engine had 34.74 belt and 31.76 drawbar horsepower. The number the e-bay seller is advertising is much too high, unless he souped it up or managed to swap in the C-200 from a 574 or 2500A

If it's a 4 cyl engine its not 47 hp. They didn't get into that HP range until they came up with the 460 6 cylinder engine about 1958. If it is a 6 cyl engine then its probably not a 340 its more likely a 460.

Well I went and looked at the ebay item you mentioned and it sure says that. I'm sure someone will correct me on here, if what I said was BS. I guess I will do a little more checking Gary

The only thing I can think of is that they put a bigger engine in the 340 industrial. The 504 engine (c-153 4cyl)might have the 47hp. The serial# for my 340 industrial is 10652 which should make it a 1962. The 504 were made the same year by IH. I don't see any difference between the 340 industrial and the 340 utility other than the beefed up grill and the yellow paint. So maybe they put the bigger engine?

I had a backhoe with a C-153 engine, It was a sleeveless engine, Simular to a C-135. It was around 37 hp. From what I can see, to get into the high 40's Horsepower wise, the displacement had to be near 230 Cu in. I have a 460 utility which is a 6 cyl gas C-221 and rated about 47 hp. I am sure there are people on here who can clear up the matter. I do know that alot of parts interchange between the 340U and the 460U Gary
