Your Going to need a Diode inbetween the alternator and coil.Make sure the White band is one the lead going to the Alt.

David - a diode is NOT required! As long as you use a properly rated warning lamp (noted in the diagram...) a diode is unnecessary.

third party image

should say 12 v on the coil it may have an R on it and would be for a internal resistor.

That wiring will work, however, if the bulb burns out, the alternator will not get the voltage necessary to start charging. This type of system usually has a small resistor built into the lamp holder to allow the necessary voltage even if the bulb is bad.

If the system is going to have heavy electrical loading, you can run the wire from the #2 terminal on the alternator to the battery cable at the starter instead of the output on the alternator. That will allow the alternator to put out a little bit higher voltage to compensate for any voltage loss between the alternator and battery cable.

Check Bob Melville's wiring diagrams in the link below. His generous work has saved many of us from eletrical problems.

You'll also need a ballast resistor unless your coil is a true "12 volt" coil. Depending on your alternator choice, you may need an indicator light. If the tractor has lights, you'll need 12 volt bulbs.

Having done a couple of these, I recommend ripping out and throwing away all the wiring except the battery cables.

how do you know if a coil is a true 12 volt.

If you buy a new 12 volt coil, no need for any external ballast. A 12 volt coil will have somewhere aorund 2.5 to 3.5 ohms of primary winding resistance as measured between its lil + and - terminals. It may be labeled "12 Volts" or "12 Volts NOT for use with ballast resistor" NOTE if its labeled " 12 volts for use with ballast resistor" then you need one cuz its in reality a 6 volt coil.

If you change from Pos to Neg ground the coil should be wired - to distributor ya know and the ammeter leads need swapped or it will read bass ackwards.
